Rodney Harrison: Jets only 5, 6-win team with Geno Smith at QB

The New York Jets have made a big splash this offseason, adding key pieces such as Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Brandon Marshall. But NBC analyst — and, oh yeah, former New England Patriots safety — Rodney Harrison doesn't seem all that impressed.

“You can say whatever you want about Darrelle Revis — and I do believe he’s the best cornerback in the league — but Darrelle Revis has not thrown a touchdown pass," Harrison said, via ESPN.com. "He’s not your quarterback. Yes, he can shut down a No. 1 receiver, but they need a quarterback. The Jets are, all of a sudden, on a high, thinking they’re going to win a championship. You’re not going to win a championship — you’re not even going to make the playoffs — because you don’t have a quarterback."

Well, they have one, but do they have one have one? Harrison says no. Certainly not one like this former teammate, Tom Brady.

"If you go into the season and you’re expecting Geno Smith to improve, it’s not going to happen," Harrison said. "He might get a little better, but when times get tough, when adversity hits, guess what he’s going to do? He’s going to fold just like the last couple years.

"I don’t believe in Geno Smith. I think this is a huge mistake. Hopefully in this draft, they try to address this quarterback situation, because if they go into the season with Geno Smith, they might win five or six games.”

Ouch. Well, at least it's better than 4-12, their record last season. Improvement, right?

The Jets did add Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is coming off a broken leg and a benching with the Houston Texans and who ideally would not be the team's starter, either. They also have Matt Simms, who has been with the team off and on since 2012 but has a mere 39 regular-season pass attempts. Wonder what Harrison thinks of Simms.

The Jets' brass is up in Oregon to keep an eye on Marcus Mariota at a workout on Monday and could be in a position to draft him should he fall out of the top five picks. But there's a feeling that the Jets perhaps might not yet be enamored with the former Ducks QB.

Is there anyone else they love in this draft? Harrison might have a say on anyone the Jets bring in the door.
