Detroit Lions bid goodbye to Havard ‘Kickalicious’ Rugland

Kickalicious, we hardly knew ya.

The Detroit Lions cut kicker Havard Rugland, aka "Kickalicious," the international sensation, on Tuesday as they get closer to the league-mandated 75-man roster. That means David Akers has won the Lions' kicking job a year after struggling down the stretch with the 49ers.

But back to Kickalicious for a moment. He captured our attention with his insane Youtube audition (pushing five million views now), and with a name that could have placed him in the middle of the "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" series, he became something of a cult phenomenon.

Really, Rugland did nothing wrong. The 28-year-old Norwegian made all three of his field-goal attempts in the preseason, handled kickoff duty and reportedly was popular among his new teammates, despite the international press attention he received. The Lions clearly just trusted Akers a little bit more.

Now, all of that is gone — for now. It will be fascinating to see if another team kicks the tires on "Kickalicious" after a good first NFL showing.
