Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer will make second start

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer played so well last week, coach Rod Chudzinski did not see any reason to make a change this weekend.

Hoyer will make his second consecutive start, according to Cleveland.com reporter Mary Kay Cabot. Chudzinski made the announcement during his press conference on Wednesday. Hoyer completed 30 of 54 passes for 321 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, including a winning 7-yard scoring touchdown pass to Jordan Cameron in the final minute, in Cleveland’s 31-27 victory Minnesota.

The move does not come as a total surprise.

Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden is still recovering from a sprain right thumb. Weeden started in Cleveland’s first two games before sustaining the injury. He reportedly may start throwing later this week.

Hoyer spent his first three seasons with the New England Patriots as a backup to Tom Brady. Both players spoke after Hoyer’s recent win, but Cleveland’s quarterback would not expand on their discussion.

Cleveland will face a dilemma if Hoyer continues to play well when Weeden is medically cleared to play.

Weeden completed 47 of 86 passes for 516 yards, one touchdown and three interception in two Browns losses. Cleveland’s offense performed better without Weeden – some of that success could be contributed to receiver Josh Gordon’s return – and Hoyer has a chance to win the starting job if the Browns continue to win.
