Michigan football to attend 9 football camps in 7 states in June

Michigan football will make its presence felt at football camps across the country this summer.

We already knew about the Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines coaching staff’s scheduled appearances in Alabama and Texas, but Thursday the program announced that the coaches would appear at seven more camps.

The camp tour, which Michigan has called the “Football Summer Swarm Tour,” will take place from June 4-12 in Indiana, Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, California and Michigan.

The tour begins on June 4 at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis. From there it heads south to Prattville, Alabama, on June 5 and Tampa, Florida, on June 6 before flying north to Easton, Pennsylvania on June 7. Harbaugh and his staff will then fly to Texas for a camp in Houston on June 8 and Grand Prairie on June 9. The last leg of the trip is two camps in California – one in Mission Viejo on June 10 and another in Fresno  on June 11. The tour then concludes at the annual Sound Mind Sound Body camp in Detroit on June 12.

“We are excited to go across the country and teach youth football in these communities,” Harbaugh said in a statement. “This is a great way for us to continue to be ambassadors for the great game of football.”

It’s also a way for Michigan to develop relationships (with high school programs and prospects) in some of the most fertile recruiting areas in the country. Penn State head coach James Franklin ruffled some feathers by bringing his staff to camps in SEC country (Florida and Georgia) last summer. It seems that Harbaugh is taking this practice to a completely new level.

The NCAA prohibits programs from hosting camps more than 50 miles away from campus, but a loophole allows them to participate in these “satellite camps” as guest coaches. The SEC forbids staffs from taking advantage of the loophole.
