Maryland adds ex-Oklahoma State QB Daxx Garman
A few months after deciding to transfer from Oklahoma State, Daxx Garman has landed in the Big Ten.
The University of Maryland announced Thursday that Garman, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound quarterback, will join the team for 2015 season. Garman, who graduated from Oklahoma State earlier this month, has one year of eligibility remaining and is set to begin graduate classes at Maryland on Monday.
Garman is expected to be eligible immediately.
“We are excited that Daxx will be joining our program,” said Maryland head coach Randy Edsall. “He is an experienced quarterback who has proven himself as an accomplished starter in the Big 12, helping to lead his team to postseason bowl game. Daxx is an outstanding student who has displayed tremendous poise and maturity during his college career. He comes in knowing he is competing for the starting quarterback position and is looking forward to the competition and being part of our football family.”
Garman started eight games for Oklahoma State as a junior in 2014 and threw for 2,041 yards, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He started his career at Arizona in 2011 and redshirted before transferring to Oklahoma State. He sat out the 2012 season due to the NCAA’s transfer rules and did not see any game action in 2013.
“Coach Edsall has done a great job with the football program and he truly cares about his players,” Garman said. “I’m very excited to compete in the Big Ten Conference. Maryland is an outstanding university and I’m excited to further my education and continue playing football. I enjoyed my visit in College Park and I’m excited to have this opportunity.”
Based on experience alone, Garman looks to have the upper hand in a wide-open quarterback competition for the Terps. Senior Caleb Rowe, who has appeared in 12 games over the past three seasons, was projected to replace longtime starter C.J. Brown, but was held out of spring practice as he recovers from a torn ACL. Redshirt sophomore Shane Cockerille and redshirt junior Perry Hills (who started seven games in 2012) split reps with the first team throughout the spring.
