Receiver Desean Holmes abruptly quit San Diego State without telling anyone.

Wide receiver Desean Holmes, a former four-star recruit, won’t play for San Diego State this season after he abruptly packed up his dorm room and left the school without telling anyone.

According to coach Rocky Long, Holmes missed a morning weightlifting session on Friday and when a graduate student went to find him, Holmes dorm room was vacant.

He was only with the program five days.

“The young man has a lot of problems, way too many for us to handle,” Long told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Obviously, he wasn’t ready to be here.”

Holmes had 14 known scholarship offers, including some from major programs such as UCLA, USC, Nebraska and Oklahoma, but signed with the Aztecs on National Signing Day. However, Long said Holmes stopped communicating with the coaches during the summer. He reconnected a couple weeks before school started, enrolled and was in class on the first day of school on Monday.

Long said recruiting coordinator Tony White had talked with people connected with Holmes, but hasn’t been able to get in touch with the star receiver, who lives with a foster family.

However, Long said the team won’t keep a roster spot open for Holmes.

“If he can’t stay longer than a couple of days we don’t want him back,” Long said.
