Two felony charges against former Central Michigan defensive back Brandon Greer were dropped Friday after a judge cited lack of evidence.

Greer, 22, was charged with attempted kidnapping and assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct stemming from a July 9 arrest. Greer was accused of trying to kidnap a woman who was out walking her dog. He was later found acting suspiciously in his car in the parking lot of an apartment complex, which led to his arrest.

Greer, who was dismissed from the team shortly after his arrest, remains in jail on eight counts of disturbing the peace.

Chief Judge Paul Chamberlain, in a written opinion filed July 31, said there was no evidence presented in court that indicated there was a weapon or an attempt to confine the woman. The judge said that the absence of these things meant there was no probable cause for the charges.

However, the July 30 hearing did reveal that Greer told officers he was just trying to be more outspoken like his Central Michigan coaches had encouraged him to do.

During his testimony, Covarrubias said Greer told him his coach told him he needed to be a leader, and encouraged him to be more outspoken. Greer stated that this inspired him to start conversations with strangers and introduced himself, particularly if the stranger had a dog. Greer admitted to having several conversations with other people the night before his arrest, including three women and one man. He also admitted to being on Crapo Street, speaking to a woman with a dog and that he moved to the passenger side of his car while speaking to her.

Greer's original bond was set at $750,000, but his lawyers are working on lowering that fee now that felony charges have been dismissed.

Greer, a two-year starter, played in 13 games last season and had 47 total tackles, one tackle for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and team-leading three interceptions.
