Larry Bird would like to team with Kobe for the win, LeBron for the fun

Larry Bird is weighing into the whole Kobe Bryant vs. LeBron James debate. Kind of. Actually, his nuance is kind of refreshing, even if he appears to prefer hypothetically suiting up with Bryant over James. In an interview with Bill Simmons of Grantland, Bird spoke of the perks of playing with either two former MVPs:

"Well, probably Kobe, because of the fact that ... well, of course he wouldn't have been shooting as much as he does now ... but his desire to win, his dedication, to always get better, uh, and he's just, he's just tough," Bird said. "He's just a tough cat.

"But, if you want to have fun, like I did with Bill Walton, play with LeBron. It would have probably been more fun to play with LeBron, but if you want to win and win and win, it's Kobe. Not that LeBron's not a winner, just that [Kobe's] mindset is to go into every practice, every game, to get better."

Larry's right. Kobe is absolutely insane when it comes to competitive drive. And, if you'll allow for the easy joke, he'd probably be the only NBA player to ever hold Larry Bird below 20 points on average, mainly because Kobe would be shooting so dang much (to use a Bird-ism). Of course, James played a full month of basketball after Bryant's Lakers were swept out of the playoffs last year, so let's not go too over the top with the part about Kobe always being a sure winner. At least James' Heat took two games from Dallas.

It's the practice mention that cannot be questioned. James' game has grown up quite a bit since he entered the NBA in 2003, but Bryant's growth has been through the roof.  He frustrates at times because you know he knows better, especially while taking those 20-footers, but his ball-handling and defense and post game and one-time obsession with the triangle offense (which predated Phil Jackson's time with the Lakers) all came from his ridiculous practice habits. Habits that continue to this day, even if he has to sit out the odd Lakers practice due to the knee and wrist injuries he's gutting through.

He still digs 'em, as he told ESPN's Colin Cowherd on Tuesday (via Sports Radio Interviews):

"I actually enjoy that more than the actual games because the journey is always more significant I think. The practices when no one is looking and that sort of stuff, that's always been more fun to me. The preparation has always been more enjoyable."

With that in place, LeBron James is averaging 29 points on 55 percent shooting, with a combined 15.1 rebounds/assists and 2.4 steals/blocks for a team with the NBA's second-best record, while playing without Dwyane Wade for nine games.

    Larry knows what's up. It's a win-win.

Disagreeing with Larry Bird would be like disagreeing with Bill Gates on how to make a million dollars.

Put Lebron on those Lakers teams in 2000,2001,& 2002 and Lebron would have three rings, and there is no way anyone can reasonably blame Lebron for the Cavs getting swept by the Spurs in the 2007 finals...

I love how this #$%$ Kelly Dwyer has to make up excuses for Lebrons lack of "winning" play and attitude. Larry says it best. Kobe Wins. Lebron is fun. Winning if more fun than just having "fun".

During the championship series with Cleveland and now Miami. Lebron will score at will from 1st to 3rd quarter. Lebron hardly touched the ball in the 4th quarter. He dd not want the ball or take control of the game. That's the difference between him and Kobe. Kobe would want the ball on his hands when the game gets rough for his team and he always delivers. So Larry bird is right, Lebon is fun to watch and Kobe likes to win.

Let's remember Kobe has also been in the league for about 6 years longer than Lebron. Jordan never won a title until his 7th year in the league, than on the flip side Jordan didn't need to join the Celtics or Lakers to win the title he did it with the guys he had while Lebron has tried to collaborate with fellow Olympic stars to try to win a title. Imagine if Jordan teamed up with his 1984 Olympic teammates in Charles Barkley and Pat Ewing to win a title? It's a nice statistic but the chemistry Jordan had with Pippen and Grant than later Pippen and Rodman and the rest of the team was dynamic with both three peats.

Your wrong on the years it was the 1990s dream team which scottie pippen was on ...........1984 they were coming out of college......all the players you named played with better talent than lebrons whole 7 years in clevland and still got them to a title which barkley and ewing only did one time

When the king gets a ring for each finger on his right hand, then let's compare him to Kobe. I think Kobe will see at least one more ring before he retires. I don't think James will half that number (3 total rings for those of you with King James mental math).

Really not a valid argument...the first three rings Kobe played second fiddle to Shaq, who was the finals MVP for all three championships. The second three rings he had two allstar/olympic level talents teamed with him as well in Pau and Odom

Kobe (who I am not fan of) says he goes into every game like he's the 12th man on the team and has to prove he deserves to be on the floor. That's why he's got the most killer instinct of any current player. That's why he's also no fun.

LaBron is good, there is no denying that, he finally has a team with all-stars around him that can play..but until he earns himself a handfull of rings..this debate will always be favored to Kobe...

Why didn't LeBron James go to college? Because he couldn't finish the finals!

Larry Bird (a legendary Celtic player) calls Kobe, a Laker, a better winner than LeBron, and Dwyer still can't just admit Kobe's better. Instead of having the article link say, "Bird: Kobe Better Winner Than LeBron", it's, "Bird: LeBron more fun than Kobe". His use of "even if" in the first paragraph when Larry said he prefers LeBron pushes more of Kelly's bias. He jokes about Kobe's shooting even though his assists way up, and Larry himself is known as a team-leading shooter. Then Kelly goes on to say, "James played a full month of basketball after Bryant's Lakers were swept out of the playoffs last year..." but fails to mention that James lost, too. And that the West is far, far tougher than the East. And that Kobe has 5 rings to LeBron's zero. And in the end, he can't help but try to spit out some skewed stats in LeBron's favor.

Can Dwyer die yet? At least get someone who can inform readers about basketball instead of vomiting up more worthless opinion based on not liking an athlete who beat your team over and over again every year.

Well lets see...how many of Kobe's rings came with the best center in the game at the time patrolling the paint? No, Kobe didnt leave LA to collect talent together, but dont forget Pau and Odom were both all-stars before they came to LA as well...Kobe just had a front office that was able to bring in more star power (LA vs Cleveland, tough decision?) than LeBron did. People like to forget but Jordan had two all-stars with him for each of his championships as well (Scottie/Grant, Scottie/Rodman). How exactly were those stats skewed? Really people should just quit with the comparisons and admit that both are two of the most talented players to play the game and leave it alone.

When Larry Bird speaks, you can take it to the bank, met him in a non professional context, at home, a lovely person and as down to earth as they come, a gentleman in every respect, just saying.

"Of course, James played a full month of basketball after Bryant's Lakers were swept out of the playoffs last year" really????? Pretty sure Kobe does more with less, plus Kobe doesn't get half the calls that Lebrons gets and if he doesn't the 6'8" 250lb guy whines like theres no tomorrow

Please Kelly...you should stop brown nosing Lebron until he accomplishes at least HALF of what Kobe has. On the other hand you probably like the smell up in there.

Anyone who has ever bounced a b-ball would choose Kobe over Lebron - duh... Difference is 10-15 IQ points, at least. Smart ball always prevails..
