Fouls lead to an Alex Caceres loss while Matt Brown is back on track at UFC 143

Figueroa reacts to illegal strike (Tracy Lee)LAS VEGAS -- Twice, Alex Caceres landed kicks to Edwin Figueroa's groin that looked like he was attempting to nail 60-yard field goals. But they cost him an extra point and the decision in their bantamweight bout on Saturday at UFC 143.

Caceres landed his first kick early in the first round at Mandalay Bay, which sent Figueroa rolling across the mat in agony. Referee Herb Dean issued Caceres a "strong warning" after Figueroa signaled he was able to continue.

The rest of the first round was wild, as Figueroa connected with a head kick and nearly finished the fight, but Caceres rallied and went for several submission attempts late in the round.

Midway through the second, Caceres struck again. This time, Dean took the highly unusual step of docking the fighter two points for the infraction as the fight continued.

Figueroa won round three on all three cards. The scores were 28-27 across the board, two for Figueroa and one for Caceres. If there had been a standard one-point deduction, the bout would have been a majority draw, with two 28-28 cards and a 29-27 for Caceres.

"I felt like it was a hard earned paycheck," said Figueroa. "He was a good fighter. I had to dig deep for this one.  He came out and landed a few shots early.  It was a tough fight but I came out the winner."

The loss was the third in four fights for Caceres, the former "TUF" standout. Figueroa was won two straight.

    "Immortal" Brown back on track.

Matt Brown may or may not be "Immortal," as his nickname suggests, but he sure has managed to hang around in the UFC's welterweight division.

Brown has grinded his way through 11 UFC fights since 2008, showing promise, but never quite building enough momentum to break through. But he's hoping to turn the page in 2012 after scoring a knockout victory over Chris Cope at UFC 143 Saturday.

"That's exactly what I need to be doing," said Brown (13-11) "I got away from who I am."

Brown controlled the action in round one against a tentative Cope (5-4), but never got an opening to do serious damage. That changed early in round two, when he feigned a left, followed with a big right hand that connected, then floored Cope with a left hook. He landed a few more shots on the ground before referee Kim Winslow stopped it at 1:19.

The win came as a relief to Brown, who had lost four of his previous five fights. "I've got a right hand to knock out anybody, I hope to see more of that."

What cost Alex Caceres was his inability to finish the fight. He was in beautiful position time and time again, but could not lock in a submission. Bruce Lee-Roy needs to take some time before his next fight and work on his submission game.

why he thinks he's perfect a perfect 6-6-0 now

His submission game was fine, he needs to hit the weight room. Figueroa was outskilled but his strength wouldn't let Caceres get the choke.

Maybe he should be dropped. Since he does suck.

That two point deduction was excessive. It should have been a one point. I don't like the Caceres kid but you don't want to see that sort of stuff.

I was really happy to see Brown crush Cope.

        I agree, i don't remember ever seeing a 2 point deduction before.

        yeah, thought so too

Dude he was warned and then proceeded to kick the guy hard in the nuts a second time. If anything he should have been disqualified. FYI - Its impossible that all 3 judges gave Figueroa the 3rd round, because one judge had the fight 30-27 for Bruce Leroy before the 2 point deduction. Obviously he had the third round for Caceres.

The new rule should be if it looks intentional like these did, the other guy gets a free shot at your nuts.
      • Jon 3 months ago
I don't think they were intentional but that would be a interesting rule would they call it the ro-sham-bo rule? LOL

      • Jon 3 months ago

Sounds like you go kicked in the head not in the groin.

After watching bruce leroy I say the new rule should be after one kick to the nuts you get a warning. If you kick the guy in the nuts a second time for the rest of the fight - you get disqualified and loose the fight. Them 2 (actually 3) kicks to Figueroa put him at such a weakened disadvantage - it ain't fair and should become grounds for disqualification in MMA. If you can't do a proper inside leg kick at the elite level of the UFC - too bad - you get a big DQ for the 2nd miss!

Herb Dean ruined that fight. Taking a point for each illegal kick is fine; a warning, and subsequent two point deduction changes the entire bout. Had a point been deducted the first time, perhaps the second wouldn't have happened, we'll never know. He's usually pretty good at managing a fight, but this time I've got to take a point away.

I think Herb Dean thought the kicks were far to hard to be unintentional. Also he probabley thought that 2 hard groin kicks would do so much damage that 1 point wasnt enough, that they could effectivly make it hard for Figueroa to get thru the fight and not get finished

The bigger story is, if Herb Dean was so eager to hand out point deductions then why didn't he take a point away from koscheck. He warned him to stop, then kos kept doing it right after and then the next round he poked him again and all he did was warn him again

The main issue here is that Dean decided the winner of the fight. I felt Caceres won, but even if you thought he lost, Dean should have either stopped the fight after the second kick or deducted one point instead of his half-a$$ed two point deduction. If the kicks were unintentional( which they obviously were) then only one point should have been deducted. If they were intentional then Dean should have informed Edwin that if he felt to injured to continued Caceres would be DQed. Either way he was wrong to make the call that he did.

Not even including the Bruce Leroy fight, I thought that Herb was off his game that night. It's like he wanted to rush clinch work that was actually active. On another note...for some reason, Bruce Leroy entertains me. But if you want to maintain the integrity of the UFC, he should be considered on very thin ice for poor performances and a journeyman record. Maybe he can entertain me at a lower level promotion.

Caceres also had trouble at the weight in, he was 2 lbs over and had to go naked. Some how underwear weighed a lb and he made it, just to give that joke of fight. My hats off to Figueroa for continuing to fight he showed great heart.

Cant believe people think that two points was excessive. Try and gets kicked straight in the nuts and finish a fight. In my opinion should have been a DQ. One is an accident but two, and another that grazed him, is reckless and really changed the momentum of the fight in Caceres' favor.

He actually kicked him in the nuts 3 times. Twice in the first round and once in the second. The second time he kicked him in the first round Figueroa cringed for a second and looked at Careres like "are you kidding me?" and Careres apologized for it, but Figueroa kept fighting that time. So ya 2 points for kicking someone in the nuts 3 times, 2 of which were straight shots, is acceptable.

Alex good fight, just too many mistakes.

I can't believe all the pro Caceres posts on here. First off the kid is arrogant as hell. You can tell by his facial expressions. Also his banner had him wearing sunglasses and posing like he's some kind of megastar. What a joke. The kids record is now 6-6-0. That is no reason to be cocky. He has a ton of work to do on his kicks. Honestly two groin kicks I mean full on kicks in two rounds. Of course he's going to look good when his opponent is beat to hell by illegal strikes. I applaud Figueroa for hanging in there and fending off Caceres' attempts ride his back. Not to mention his nickname is ripped from a fictional movie character. I will be happy if I never see Caceres in the UFC again. Caceres is a joke. Bottom line.

I've seen many fights where fighters were kicked multiple times before a point was deducted. I had Alex winning the first round. They were 50/50 at the stand up until the 1 kick and the Alex controlled the ground. Alex won the 2nd and 3rd round and the 2nd round he dominated, could of been a 10-8 but should of been 9-8 after two point deduction. Meaning Fig would of lost 28-27

#$%$ decision. Even with the 2 point deduction Alex still won. How did all three judges see round 3 for Edwin? Maybe round 1 but defiantly not round 3

Dana needs to cut his losses with alex now the kid is a joke he puled that #$%$ last night to get out of the fight he's a punk that wasn't sure he was ahead in the judges eye's.at least send him to strike force to get a few fights under his belt.
