Roy Nelson is tough as hell, but it’s not enough to compete with Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143

LAS VEGAS -- Roy Nelson is slowly shedding the blubber around his midsection, but he still has a ways to go. Fabricio Werdum showed that tonight.

The Brazilian, fighting for the first time in the UFC since 2008, actually picked apart Nelson on the feet to cruise to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all three cards.

"Roy is very tough and can endure a lot of beating, but I found his weak spots," said Werdum.

With a giant belly and a mullet, Nelson is the everyman, and the crowd at Mandalay Bay roared in approval of the Las Vegas native. He came into the fight at just 246 pounds, his lightest weight in years. But even minus the extra 20 pounds he used to fight with, Nelson was still taking big deep breaths midway through the second round. He was a sitting duck.

Werdum is generally regarded as one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu artists in the division, but no one's ever raved about his striking. He beat the heck out of Nelson on the feet. The 6-foot Nelson played perfectly into the 6-5 Werdum's gameplan of working head control to throw knees. Werdum opened a huge gash on Nelson's forehead.

"This fight was important to me. I trained hard every day for this fight. I had a good strategy going into the fight but the main thing for me was to come out with a victory," said Werdum. FightMetric had Werdum outlanding Nelson 91-26.

Nelson (16-7 , 3-3 UFC) took a beating to the chin and body along the cage over the first five minutes. It just got worse from there. An exhausted Nelson tried to throw the home run overhand right for the next 10 minutes. In doing so, he moved forward and kept ducking his head. Werdum landed more knees and pounded Nelson to the face with his jab.

Reality is that Nelson is a tweener. If he really got in great shape, he'd probably still weigh 220 pounds. That's too small for heavyweight and way too big for the 205-pound division. Werdum is a massive guy, but still quick enough to avoid the plodding Nelson.

"I never really dwell on losses. I think it makes you a better fighter depending on how you look at it. Yeah it sucks, but I'll get back in the gym and get better."

Verdum was pretty good before Strikeforce, I just dont like his missionary position style that he showed with Overeem, but he did good this time around. Put him and Mir or Cain.

I like Big Country, but I was very frustrated watching the fight tonight. Why stalk a guy around the ring for 3 straight rounds, yet never throw a punch except when breaking from the clench? Talk about a losing game plan!

Roy, unlike other fighters, puts it all out there when he fights. Fans like to see him fight because he'll bring it. If only other more talented fighters will do the same then ufc will be a bigger hit

Nelson lost a fight against a surprising Werdum who's standup has improved tremendously. So what? It doesn't mean he won't win his next fight. He's still competetive and #$%$ entertaining.

We have a soft spot for Roy and were disappointed to see him lose. Hope to see him again!

Roy should be fighting at 205. He needs to decide what is more important to him the amount on his fight checks or the amount of food on his plate.

He doesn't need to fight at a lighter weight, he needs to get into better shape. There are pklenty of heavyweights who are 6' tall. Hell, Jeff Monson is only 5'8 but, in better shape than Nelson.

He definitely should be fighting at 205 and maybe that's what he's gradually making his way towards.

Roy Nelson has fought the best of the best and not knocked out or stopped and as I see it if the fight went to more rounds Roy started winning against Jr. at the end of their fight ...

Forgot to add; Roy one or two early KO's of lesser foes does not make you a homerun hitter, get back to your grappling and start winning again and if a KO comes just take it and stop deluding yourself that your a short George Foreman

MMA is a sport. Go watch WWE if smart tactics bore you. Whoever wins the game today are you going be mad if they don't throw a hail mary on every down because running is boring?

Pshh...Say people are cry'n...Nick isn't complaining about the lose...He's b'tchn about the direction the rules have taken the UFC..Heath Herring had some of the same issues with the rules as they are in the UFC...To call someone a champion they need to beat who they fight..Carlos didn't beat Nick, he didn't lose...To win a fight by fighting not to lose is crap...Carlos is better than that...He fought a good fight, but that wasn't Carlos in the ring, It was Jackson saying "don't lose Carlos". I have watched Carlos his whole career, he trains right up the road from here, that wasn't Carlos in there, srry..That was Jackson worried about another of his top fighters getting beat..If Carlos fights like that against GSP, he'll get whoop'd. I still think Carlos coulda knock'd Nick out...He was faster, made him miss, but never did anything to make Nick pay for the miss..A leg kick and sprint to the other side of the cage?...Really?...Champion?...Carlos was landing good shots, why run? That's all people are sick of..You could even hear it in Carlos at the press conference, when he made it perfectly clear he followed Jackson's game plan...

Diaz is good. He just isn't top 10 for his weight class. Might make a decent gatekeeper. That is about it.
