Carlos Condit pulls upset on Nick Diaz to take UFC interim welterweight title, loser says he’s done with fighting

LAS VEGAS -- Nick Diaz is brilliant at playing mind games with his opponents, but it didn't work on any level tonight.

Carlos Condit never took the bait before or during the fight, stuck to the gameplan and outsmarted Diaz to get himself a share of the UFC welterweight title.

Condit moved beautifully all night and landed 60-plus kicks. He never stood in front of Diaz for more than a few seconds. It all added up to a unanimous decision victory, 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46, in the main event of UFC 143 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

It was a difficult fight to score. Judge Cecil Peoples scored it 49-46 (Condit 1, 2, 4, 5), Patricia Morse Jarman had 49-46 (Condit 1, 2, 4, 5) and Junichiro Kamijo 49-46 (Condit 1, 3, 4). Aside the from the fourth round, each round was razor thin.

When the decision was read, Diaz was shocked. His behavior is nearly impossible to predict, but he threw everyone for a loop during his postfight discussion with UFC analyst Joe Rogan. He complained about the decision and then said he's had it with the sport.

"I'm not going to accept the fact that was a loss. That ain't right. I pushed him back all fight. I walked him down. Carlos is a great guy. I'm happy for him and his family, but I think I'm done with this MMA," said Diaz.

Diaz (26-8, 7-5 UFC) appeared to be the aggressor all night, but was it "effective aggression" as the unified rules state in detailing how to score a fight? Condit's constant move stymied Diaz, who was outlanded outlanded 159-117 according to Fight Metric. Compustrike had total strikes 146- 110 in favor of Condit. It also said kicks landed were 104-19 for Condit.

The loss ended an 11-fight, four-year win streak. Diaz is just 28 years old and one of the rising stars of the sport. He's got a bright future with massive earning potential.

"You guys pay me way too much, but I don't think I'm going to get enough to keep going in this. I don't need this [expletive]," Diaz said. "I pushed him backwards the whole time. I landed the harder shots. He ran the whole time. He kicked me in my leg with little baby leg kicks. I don't want to play this game no more. I'm out of this [expletive]."

Condit (28-5, 5-1 UFC) picks up the UFC's interim welterweight belt. After undergoing surgery for a torn ACL, The champion Georges St-Pierre is sidelined until late 2012. Before the fight, UFC president Dana White couldn't say for certain if the winner tonight would sit out 8-9 months until GSP is ready.

Coming into tonight's tilt, Condit was sizable underdog at plus-185. A possible Diaz-GSP fight was expected to be one of the biggest UFC fights of 2012. A St-Pierre-Condit fight won't have the same sizzle, but it should be a helluva brawl based on what the new interim champ showed tonight.

The judges made the right call. The first round was tough to call with Condit starting out strong and Diaz closing well. Condit ran a little too much in the second and lost the round. He corrected his mistake from there and was simply brilliant over the final three rounds. Diaz stalked him for 15 more minutes eating kick after kick. In most cases, when Diaz tried to settle and throw punches, Condit was nowhere to be found. He scooted out of the way in when it looked like a classic Diaz 10-12 punch flurry was coming. The early work to Diaz's legs really sapped him late. He looked a step slow in the final round.

The fight didn't end without drama and that's where Diaz backers may have their biggest complaint. With 1:23 left, Diaz got standing back control, immediately dropped to the ground and quickly got his hooks in.

With 1:02 left, Diaz changed his legs to a body lock. He work for the choke, but never got his hands in position. Diaz had his right arm across the face, but Condit did a good job of tucking his chin. With around eight seconds left, Diaz threatened with an armbar attempt, but Condit was too slick and slipped out instantly. Some thought that was enough to take the round. It's hard call after watching Condit make Diaz look desperate and slow for the first three and half minutes of the round.

Condit was the better fighter that night, and Diaz has a right to be upset about loosing his shot at GSP, but if GSP beats Condit, then GSP will surely give Diaz a shot then. Diaz, you'll regret it, if you retire now. The UFC is your legacy. Apologize for your public venting, then step back into the ring and do what it is that you do best. Enjoy your skills while you have them, win or lose.

Isn't this Diaz the guy who said he was going to boxing? LMAO!!! He would get DESTROYED by a world class fighter. He has NO HANDSPEED...LOL. I'm not disrespecting him as a "fighter" but this cat is too full of himself. I'm going to quit because it didn't go my way...that's what a baby says. He lost because the other guy outsmarted him and out connected him.

There's no rule that says I have to stand there and let this dude just throw...some of you are stupid. He didn't "just" run...he picked and moved and stood his ground. Considering the skill of GSP, his athleticism and quickness...I would be totally shocked if Diaz could beat him. Frankly, he'd probably need to get lucky...tactically, athletically, skillfully...he's not in GSP's league.

Diaz wants to box? He should face Manny Pacquiao...

if diaz would go to boxing, he would be like antonio margarito, stalking his opponent the whole fight. manny pacquiao will destroy him using just one hand.

If Diaz's fist were as good as his mouth, he definitely would have won. Save it for the Octagon next time.

Instead of calling Condit a sissy who ran like the uneducated caveman like fans I am going to take a different approach and say that it's a shame that Nick can't adapt to an opponent. Can Diaz only win when he's going toe to toe? This is a sport of mixed martial arts. Go watch Tough man if you want to see two guys swinging wildly until one falls.

YESSSS!!!! MIke ,thank you... Why would he noy "Adapt to the situation and improvise" . I don't think this guy as it stands right now has what it takes in his make up to be an elite fighter.

Sorry Mike, but you obviously forget where this sport came from and what really caused it to blow-up into the sport it is today. Just like if you were to ask Boxing fans this same question, what do you like seeing more, a fight go to a controversial decision or someone getting knocked out, submitted, quit, stoppage, etc? You'll get the dominant answer every time that fans want to see the highlight real finish! Why do you think all of the famous, Hall of Fame boxers are so popular like Ali, Foreman, Tyson, Holyfield? It's because they knocked down, knocked out most of their opponents and didn't leave it up to judgement! Chuck Liddell didn't blow-up till he started throwing his sledgehammers and swinging for the fences and he's easily one of the most famous UFC fighters in history! He did it the way the sport was meant to be a straight-up fight to see who is literally the one left standing!!!

Its hard to adapt to someone who runs from you. No it doesn't have to be a boxing match but it is the Ultimate FIGHTER Championship and all fighters should be forced to engage in the fighting or at least automatic pint deductions every time you visually run from an opponent to avoid the fighting...it's different when a fighter has been down on the ground taking a beating and finally gets up and runs to the other side of the ring to gather themselves up to get ready to back at it...Condit ran to avoid contact and as soon as Diaz was close ran again...I have no problem with the leg kicks and have problem with side stepping punches to avoid getting hit, but you must engage your opponent...side stepping a barrage and then running to the other side of the ring is crap...Next Fight Condit should have to wear a skirt

I love the part of the headline that says "loser says he's done with fighting". Loser. Hahaha. Yes, he is.

I like Diaz but Condit won the fight, I didn't even think it was that close because Condit landed way more kicks and punches.

For all the Condit fans! Condit may have won the fight on points and earned a just victory however, It really didn't prove a whole lot. It did prove Condit can execute a game plan and that his team out-coached Ceasar Gracie. It also proved that Condit a top 3 WW felt that Diaz's striking was good enough that he had to back-pedal and run at some points for five rounds. It also proved who the "tougher" guy really was. I know the tougher guy doesn't always win just look at 'Gayweather".

My guess is that the Condit fans aren't rooting for Gayweather they are rooting for Pacquiao. Well your man Condit was Gayweather last night!

Condit fought a great and disciplined fight. I loved seeing Diaz get so frustrated. Since when is using your brains in a fight a bad thing? Condit had Diaz very frustrated at the mid-way point of the fight. If he was doing nothing but running, how did he out land Diaz by a wide margin, and set a UFC record for kicks landed in a fight? I really appreciate the cerbral demonstration displayed by the new champ, and it was a fine example of how to beat a bully. I hope Diaz is through with the sport. If so, good riddance, and don't let the cage door hit you in the #$%$ you poor sport, cry baby!!!

He set a record for leg kicks because Diaz didnt see a need to check kicks that werent doing any damage.
      • lupe 3 months ago
hey leo, did u not see diaz's left knee after the fight, it was a swollen mess!
      • scott 3 months ago
Hey LEO - If the kicks didn't do any damage then why did super cardio man Diaz slow in the 4th and 5th round. You are just some idiot who has never been in a fight and doesn't know how bad leg kicks hurt.

Condit had a great game plan and executed it over and over. Diaz just could not goad him into a brawl. Diaz may think he won that fight because he kept coming forward, but all he did was keep taking shots to the face, legs and gut.
All other fighters take note. The way to beat Diaz is don't go with his game plan and just trade punches.

Roy Nelson kept coming forward the whole fight and it worked for him. Am I right Diaz?
    • Tim R  •  Cleveland, United States  •  3 months ago
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, the Diaz guys are as bad as the Fedor guys. Guys there isn't a meter on the fighers bodies so the judges know who was hitting harder. Carlos out pointed him for at least 4 out of 5 rounds. Ring control is worth something, but landing shots scores points folks and Carlos landed more shots period. Diaz is a tough dude, but he still lost..

Condit's coaches had a brilliant game plan..and Diaz loves to sucker other fighters into fighting HIS fight..but when the tables were finally turned..well..it didn't look good..Diaz was out-smarted and out-fought.

You could tell several times in the fight..Condit wanted to mix it up..but continued to follow his instructions..which gave me a new respect for his self-discipline..I always liked him as a gutty fighter..but he truly showed some new dimensions to his craft..GREAT JOB Carlos!

If Diaz thought that all Condit did was run,why didn't he chase him down and beat him? Because Diaz is used to dudes freakin' out when he puts his arms up like hit me....Diaz should have stop chasing and let Condit come to him,or...Take him down by setiing it up with striking,or...Cut the ring like any TRUE smart fighter would have done...All you cavemen who wish for the "Glory" days of MMA are a bunch of pathetic cavemen who couldn't punch your way out of a wet paper bag!!! The fight game is a game of strategy or as they say in boxing THE SWEET SCIENCE.If you don't like it suck it up buttercups MMA is gettint more and more technical and i am loving it. Sure a brawl is cool every once in a while but no REAL sports fan would dismiss a superior game plan when implimented...If Diaz didn't care for what Condit was doing he should have changed his strategy, but it seems that he is not very good at that....Hell the way he was talking about GSP i thought for sure he wouldn't leave it to the judges.

Last I heard this was mixed martial art fighting I cant help it that nick the bully isnt well rounded enough to win. His whole family is a joke and that is who he learned his class and ethics from, so it dont surprize me about his post fight antics.( great skills carlos I have been watching you since the wec and wish you were given more fights you are very entertaining )

Good Riddance DIAZ!!! We will miss a great fighter, yes, but all your schitty attitude and white trash antics have no place in the octagon. Oh, and make sure you don't forget your brother on the way out the door!
    • AvEnGeRx  •  3 months ago
So the Nick master of winning fights with baby punches, complains about Carlos winning with baby kicks. Anyway you slice it the baby lost. Once he saw his trash talk couldn't throw off Carlos he knew he was done.
    • Alan W  •  3 months ago
Maybe if he looked at condit's face and then looked at his own face in the mirror he would realize that he is living in a fantasy world if he thinks he landed the cleaner and harder shots.
    • Sbigshaun  •  3 months ago
And to show the level of black belt that Diaz hold in DUUUUMB, in a MIX MARTIAL ARTS match, he asks Condit "So we throwing spinning s@!t now!?!?" It's called mixing up your attack. What an idiot.
