Report: Seattle Mariners select Lloyd McClendon as next manager

Lloyd McClendon will reportedly be the next manager of the Seattle Mariners, succeeding Eric Wedge and becoming the 19th skipper in the franchise's history.

That's according to the Puget Sound Business Journal — yes, a business journal. Their report was then confirmed by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

We still haven't heard anything from the Mariners on this. Ken Rosenthal from Fox Sports says the other finalists for the job haven't been notified, so this probably got out a wee bit earlier than Mariners brass intended.

McClendon, 54, inherits what seems like a tough job. Eric Wedge was 214-272 in three seasons with the Mariners, and he left the job after this season saying there were too many differences between himself and upper management.

The Mariners also haven't made the playoffs since 2001. They finished in last place in the AL West seven of the last 10 years and would have in 2013 had the lowly Houston Astros not switched to the AL this season.

McClendon has been a coach for the Detroit Tigers since 2006, serving under Jim Leyland. Before that, he managed the Pittsburgh Pirates for five seasons, compiling a 336–446 record from 1995 to 2000.

McClendon's time as a manager, however, is probably best remembered for the time he stole first base during an argument with an umpire.
