Sunday’s 3 stars: Ramparts’ Francois Brassard shuts the door against the Rocket

No. 1 star: Francois Brassard, Quebec Ramparts (QMJHL)

The Ramparts only outshot the P.E.I Rocket by one shot, but Ramparts goaltender Francois Brassard turned away all 27 of his shots, while the Rocket's let six goals slip past them.

Brassard's shutout didn't come easy. The Rocket made a third period surge to try and break his perfect game, firing 16 shots on him. The Ramparts also took three minor penalties in the third period, but Brassard bailed out his team every time.

With that win the Ramparts are now only six points behind the Shawinigan Cataractes for first place in the league. Both the Ramparts and Cataractes have ten games remaining and won't cross paths in any of their matchups.

No. 2 star: Michael Sgarbossa, Sudbury Wolves (OHL)

Sgarbossa's four-point performance was the only reason the Wolves/Battalion game was close, but it wasn't enough for a Wolves win. They ended up losing to Brampton 4-3 in overtime after Mitchell Porowski scored on a penalty shot.

Sgarbossa scored two goals in the second period and notched a goal and an assist in the third. The San Jose Sharks prospect's chemistry with winger Josh Leivo was evident tonight. Leivo assisted all three of Sgarbossa's goals.

Sgarbossa is now tied with Barrie Colts' Tanner Pearson for second in OHL scoring with 79 points. He's eight points back of Ottawa 67's Tyler Toffoli for the scoring title.

No. 3 star: Mathieu Jean-Philippe, Rimouski Ocèanic (QMJHL)

Eight of Rimouski's 16 first-period shots found the back of the net tonight against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Three of the eight goals came from defenceman Mathieu Jean-Philippe.

Jean-Philippe is now on over a point-per-game pace in Rimouski with four goals and 15 points in 14 games since being trade from the Drummondville Voltigeurs. The Océanic had to pay a steep price for Jean-Philippe at the deadline. They traded their 2011 third overall pick Guillaume Gauthier. Nevertheless, it seems the trade has been paying early dividends for Rimouski.

First honourable mention: Mikhail Grigorenko, Quebec Ramparts (QMJHL)

Grigorenko swung the moment in the favour of Ramparts early on by scoring the first goal of the game just after the midway point of the first period. He later assisted two goals, one in the second and the other in the third. He now has 32 goals and 73 points in 49 games on the season. Not bad for a rookie.

Second honourable mention: Petr Straka, Rimouski Ocèanic (QMJHL)

Straka also took advantage of the Screaming Eagle's goaltending woes tonight. He netted two goals and two assists in the first period. The Columbus Blue Jackets prospect now has 16 goals and 33 points in 45 games on the season.

Third honourable mention: Marc Engel, Spokane Chiefs (WHL)

Engel only faced 18 shots in the Chiefs 3-0 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds, but a shutout is a shutout.

The Chiefs are sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference with 71 points. Since the sixth place Kelowna Rockets are 13 points back and the third place Portland Winterhawks are 12 points up, it seems inevitable that the Chiefs will meet the fourth place Vancouver Giants, who currently have 74 points, in the first round of the playoffs.
