Sunday’s 3 Stars: Bailie Generally awesome in goal; welcome to Kujertown

No. 1 star: Kevin Bailie, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

Bailie stymied the Barrie Colts with 39 saves to lead Oshawa to a 3-0 victory that put it into a playoff position in the Ontario league's Eastern Conference. The 19-year-old Bailie thwarted Barrie's big guns, denying the league's second-leading scorer, Tanner Pearson, on a first-period wraparound, and then snatching away a Mark Scheifele one-timer in the second to maintain a scoreless deadlock through the first 40 minutes. Bailie's play bought the Generals team to break out offensively, with the winning goal coming on a Christian Thomas snapshot that redirected into the goal off Andy Andreoff's foot. The goose egg was the Generals' first shutout of the season.

No. 2 star: Ryan Kujawinski, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)

Cougar Town won't be back until next month, but diehard Fronts fans are already enjoying the hit new show Kujertown. Kujawinski, the Frontenacs' most exciting 16-year-old forward since current NHLer Anthony Stewart a decade ago, had his first career two-goal game in a morale-boosting 3-2 win over the Belleville Bulls. That included one marker that coach Todd Gill, who played more than 1,000 games in The Show, called "an NHL goal."

The Fronts are too far back in the standings to think about the playoffs, but after losing their prior two games by a combined 20-4, they needed a pick-me-up. Kujawinski, who was acquired two weeks ago in the Ryan Spooner deal with Sarnia, sniped his first just 63 seconds after the Bellevillians had taken a 1-0 lead. The Iroquois Falls, Ont., native and linemates Billy Jenkins and Trevor Morbeck later clicked again for the winner. Kingston held on just barely, as Belleville's own 16-year-old whiz, Jordan Subban, hit the goalpost during a frantic final minute.

No. 3 star: Mike Aviani, Spokane Chiefs (WHL)

Aviani made sure Spokane finished off their biggest weekend off the year, scoring twice in the 6-1 win over Portland that completed a six-point weekend against the Winterhawks and formerly league-leading Tri-City Americans. The 18-year-old converted a feed from Ottawa Senators prospect and Chiefs captain Darren Kramer (two assists) just 26 seconds into the game to set the tone. Aviani also scored in the second period to open a three-goal lead and diminish the likelihood of Portland getting back in the game. It was a team effort for Spokane: Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick Dominik Uher had three points, just like he did Saturday vs. the Winterhawks, Mitch Holmberg also scored twice and Liam Stewart sniped a short-handed goal.

Honourable mention: Philippe Cadorette, Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL)

The Drakkar's goalie of the future got his first major junior shutout, making 28 saves in a tight 2-0 win over Rimouski. The 16-year-old Cadorette, who was taken 20th overall in the QMJHL entry draft last June, was playing just his fourth game since being called up, but he made 11 saves in both the second and third periods. His constancy was rewarded when NHL draft prospect Raphaël Bussières made a play that produced the deadlock-breaking goal with 3:28 to play.

Honourable mention: Zack Phillips, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)

The Minnesota Wild first-rounder scored two goals and chipped in one assist to help the Sea Dogs post a solid 5-2 road win over provincial rival Acadie-Bathurst after spotting the Titan the first two goals. Phillips put Saint John ahead for good late in the first period by pouncing on a loose puck and firing it through traffic to beat the Titan's Robert Steeves and he also converted a feed from Florida Panthers first-rounder Jonathan Huberdeau to extend the lead in the second period. With the win, the Sea Dogs moved into a tie with Shawinigan for first overall in the QMJHL. Fellow Minnesota prospect Charlie Coyle also scored for the fourth consecutive game since joining Saint John.

Potent notables — Detroit Red Wings fourth-rounder Marek Tvrdon had one goal and one assist in Vancouver's win over Seattle; he's had a point in all eight games since returning the world junior championship ... Seventeen-year-old Chase Clayton, who scored twice in Calgary's win over Red Deer, has eight goals in 10 games this month after netting just two in his first 23 ... In the OHL, Toronto Maple Leafs third-rounder Greg McKegg got his second goal of the game in overtime to help the London Knights escape with a 3-2 win over last-place Erie ... Niagara IceDogs captain Andrew Agozzino had his second two-goal game in a row ... In the QMJHL, Jean-Sébastien Dea scored twice in Rouyn-Noranda's 9-3 win over Val-d'Or ... Blainville-Boisbriand's Dylan Anderson had two assists, giving him five helpers in two games ... Acadie-Bathurst's Zach O'Brien scored his QMJHL-leading 42nd goal ... the Moncton Wildcats' Alex Saulnier increased his point streak to 11 games.
