OHL team apologizes for playing racy Joe Jonas video in front of 15,000 schoolkids
Would that we could all skip directly to laughing about a simple click-and-drag error by a team's gameday staff, but people tend to treat what appears on a video board as sacrosanct, plus this involves depictions of S-E-X in front of the C-H-I-L-D-R-E-N.
The Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's hold one of major junior's more successful 'school day' games, where the team plays at an early hour in front of an arena full of enthusiastic, screaming elementary school pupils. The 67's had 15,000 children from 92 schools across Canada's capital region at their game on Nov. 19 when a staff member in charge of music videos that play on Canadian Tire Centre's video screen made a mistake and cued up Joe Jonas' Just In Love.
The horror! Not the having to listen to a former Jonas brother part, but the fact there is a blink-and-you'd-miss-it shot of half-naked performers in a bathtub and generally being frisky. I guess they were; I could only get halfway through the entire eardrum assault.
As you can imagine, the 67's had to do some very quick apologizing.

“I saw it, and my mouth just dropped,” remembers Randy Burgess, VP of Communications for the ‘67s. “Everyone was shocked. We started running around, to kill the feed, but by the time we could do that, well, it was over.
His voice inflects down. With sadness. With regret.
... “Was I shocked by what I saw? Yeah, you could say I was shocked,” says Burgess. “I was looking right at it and I couldn’t believe it.” The video is that bad. Joe Jonas in bed with a girl, both of them semi-naked, frolicking around; Joe Jonas in a bathtub, same girl, same frolicking; then . . . . well, it’s the bed and bath scenes you remember.
Perhaps not what children in grade three should be watching during school hours.
“We have instituted checks and balances to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again,” says Burgess. “Again, it never should have happened and we apologize to anyone who was offended. It was never our intention to play that video.” A class response from the Ottawa 67's. Although I don’t think Burgess should be left carrying everyone’s weight for the Great School Day Burlesque. Corbett uses that as a jumping-off point to inveigh against, "Disney kids who jump from baby-faced cherubs to soft-porn stars without giving any advance notice" and a "music industry that tells me the biggest hit of the year was channeling Marvin Gaye when the guy who sings it looks like he’s channeling Sammy Glick," a reference to Robin Thicke. And it just goes on like that, although when it comes to playing that song at sports events where there are a lot of children around, we agree.
It always seems better to over-apologize and one can get that teachers chaperoning were concerned, because they knew some parents would be concerned. That's the way it is. Attitudes change when people have to look out for a tiny human, or 30 of them at a time.
