Marcoux steals show while Dunn & Joly record hat tricks in all-QMJHL edition: Saturday’s 3 stars
No. 1 star: Etienne Marcoux, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada
Marcoux was the first star for the Armada in a QMJHL grunge match featuring the top two teams.
Marcoux stopped all 25 shots he faced for the shutout, as Blainville edged Baie-Comeau 1-0.
The game was a defensive battle featuring not only the two best teams, but the two best defensive teams in the QMJHL as well. The Armada and the Drakkar are the only two teams in the league who haven’t given up 100 goals, and they proved it on Saturday, where shots were hard to come by. Baie-Comeau led Blainville-Boisbriand in shots 25-17.
Danick Martel scored with one of his three shots on the man advantage with just under six minutes to play to improve the Armada’s record to 25-5-4-3, five points up on the Drakkar. Blainville-Boisbriand now has points in their last five games.
Baie-Comeau fell to 24-9-1-3. They snapped a four-game winning streak.
No. 2 star: Vincent Dunn, Gatineau Olympiques
Dunn paced the Olympiques to a big 4-2 road win over streaking division rival Val-d’Or.
Dunn had a hand in every scoring play for Gatineau, scoring three times and adding an assist. He scored twice in the first, including just ten seconds into the frame, and scored early in the third.
Val-d’Or scored twice in the third but it wasn’t enough for the Foreurs to mount a comeback.
Alexandre Chenier-Allard had the winning goal and added two assists for the winners, who improved to 23-13-1-0 on the year.
Val-d’Or dropped to 25-15-1-0, snapping an 11-game point-streak, including wins in 10 of their last 11.
No. 3 star: Michael Joly, Rimouski Oceanic
Joly scored three times in Rimouski’s 4-0 thrashing of Acadie-Bathurst.
He scored twice in a three-goal first period for the Oceanic, and then iced it with a goal midway through the third period. Rimouski improved to 21-11-2-4, earning points in their last six games.
Bathurst dropped to 14-19-2-2.
Philippe Desrosiers earned an easy 18-save goose egg for the Oceanic. Tyler Boland had two assists in the win.
Honourable mention: Daniel Audette, Sherbrooke Phoenix
Audette did everything he could Saturday but he couldn’t give the Phoenix a victory in Rouyn-Noranda.
Audette had four points, two goals and two assists, in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Huskies. The two goals brought his total to 10, tying his output from last season.
Sherbrooke earned a much-needed point to keep pace, but dropped to 13-21-2-2 for 16th place in the league. Rouyn-Noranda improved to 22-10-2-2.
Honourable mention: Maxime Lagacé, Shawinigan Cataractes
Lagacé got his first win in a Cataractes uniform in style, stopping 32 shots for a shutout in Shawinigan’s 2-0 win over Charlottetown.
He was traded to Shawinigan by Cape Breton for a ninth round pick in 2015. He was making his second start with the Cataractes. He was 3-4-1 with Cape Breton.
Veteran Alexandre Grand-Maison scored the winner in the third period to give Shawinigan a tie for 17th place in the 18-team QMJHL. They sit at 9-25-2-1. Charlottetown dropped to 14-19-1-4.
Notables: Alex Dubeau stopped 36-of-37 shots and Moncton won their eighth game in a row, sweeping a home-and-home with the Halifax Mooseheads. … Jérome Verrier scored the winner in overtime and added in assist in Drummondville’s 3-2 win over Victoriaville. Frédérick Gaudreau had two assists in the win. … Stephen Anderson had a goal and two assists and Oliver Cooper scored twice as Saint John doubled up Cape Breton 4-2. Cameron Darcy had two apples in the loss. … Kurt Etchegary scored twice and added a helper and Anthony Duclair had a goal and two assists in Quebec’s 4-2 win over rival Chicoutimi.
