Laughton’s hatty propels Gens past Fronts: Sunday’s 3 stars

No. 1 star: Scott Laughton, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

Laughton cracked the 80-point mark for the first time in his OHL career in style, as the Philadelphia first-rounder scored a hat trick and added an assist in Oshawa’s 7-2 throttling of the Kingston Frontenacs.

The Generals associate captain scored the first two goals of the game, and added a pretty unassisted marker to get his trifecta. After he hit the post on a breakaway, Kingston captain Michael Moffat flung a picture-perfect pass back out into the slot, which Laughton promptly slapped into the Fronts’ net. The goals gave him 37 on the season, and was his third hat trick this year. He then assisted on blueliner Colin Suellentrop’s third period goal to complete the four point night.

2014 NHL-eligible pick Michael Dal Colle had three helpers for the Generals, and Cole Cassels had a goal and two assists. Daniel Altshuller stopped 38 shots, including 16 in a third period flurry from the Fronts. Matt Mahalak took the loss, taking all seven goals on 29 shots. Another 2014 eligible pick, Sam Bennett, was tied for a team-low -3 in the game. Point, Dal Colle.

Oshawa improved their Eastern Conference-leading record to 39-16-0-5, and jumped their divisional lead over Kingston to 15 points. The Frontenacs dropped to 32-22-2-2.

No. 2 star: Nathan Noel, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)

Noel scored both goals for the Sea Dogs as they defeated the Charlottetown Islanders 2-1 on the island Sunday. The third pick in last year’s QMJHL draft did the damage in the first period to give Saint John a two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.

Antoine Landry stopped 37 shots in the win, a lone goal from Daniel Sprong ruining his shutout bid. Sprong was also a first rounder in last year’s draft.

Landry gave very good relief of usual starter Sébastien Auger as the Islanders threw everything at him in the third period looking for the equalizer; shots were 20-2 for Charlottetown in the final stanza. Eric Brassard took the loss, making 15 saves.

The Sea Dogs moved back into a playoff spot with the win, giving them 40 points to keep pace over the Cataractes, and one point off the Islanders for 15th spot. Saint John improved to 18-37-1-3, while Charlottetown dropped to 18-36-1-4.

No. 3 star: Spencer Martin, Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)

Martin made 35 saves for the goose egg as the Steelheads defeated the Niagara IceDogs 2-0.

His toughest test was the third period, where Niagara, down a goal for most of the frame, fired 15 shots at the Mississauga cage, but Martin answered each one.

Sean Day, the OHL’s underage blueliner, scored the winner for the Steelheads, and Josh Burnside lit the lamp.

Mississauga jumped to 22-33-1-3 on the year and kept pace with Ottawa, who also won Sunday. The 67s moved into a tie with the IceDogs for eighth place in the Eastern Conference, with the Steelheads two points ahead.

Honourable mention: Mitch Holmberg & Dominic Zwerger, Spokane Chiefs (WHL)

Both Holmberg and Zwerger scored hat tricks and added helpers in Spokane’s 9-4 demolishing of the Kamloops Blazers. The duo was responsible for five of Spokane’s six goals in the first period, setting the tone and the pace of the game from the get-go.

The four point night moves Holmberg back on top of the WHL scoring table, giving him 107 points on the season, and a league-leading 57 goals.

The Chiefs improved to 35-21-3-3, while Kamloops dropped to 13-44-2-3.
