Jonathan Drouin gets four points, hastens Titan coaching change: Sunday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Jonathan Drouin, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

Not to sound like the most bile-pushing Hockey Night in Canada commentator, but any time half a team's players score in the same game, chances are it will win. The Mooseheads had nine goal scorers during their 9-1 road win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, with Drouin (1G-3A, +2) having his second consecutive four-point game on the road (snub him once, shame on us).

is coaching the issue in Acadie-Bathurst?

The Tampa Bay Lightning No. 3 overall choice opened the scoring 86 seconds into the contest, crashing the crease to jam in a centring feed from Darcy Ashley. Drouin reciprocated later in the period by looking off a defender and putting a pass on the tape for Ashley to score on a wrist shot. The 18-year-old Drouin later set up goals by defenceman Matt Murphy and newcomer Philippe Gadoury, who has four goals and seven points over his first five games with Halifax since leaving the Junior A Nepean (Ont.) Raiders.

Drouin has 60 points over 26 games, even though his shooting percentage (14.3 per cent) has regressed from his 17-year-old season (23.7%). He's made up for that by continuing to improve as a playmaker.

The Titan dismissed coach Danny Dupont following the game. I'm well-aware the headline is a little sensational, so don't bother pointing it out.

The Mooseheads' drubbing also included a side of Danish dervish. Take it away, Nikolaj Ehlers.

No. 2 star Spencer Martin, Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)

The Colorado Avalanche selection's season has been peaks and valleys on a young 'Sauga team that yields a lot of Grade-A chances, but Martin extended the London Knights' malaise by making 38 saves in a 3-1 Steelheads upset. The 18-year-old goalie did his best work in the second period, when he stopped 18-of-19 Knights shots and enabled his team to take a lead into the dressing room after 15-year-old Sean Day got the eventual game-winner in the last minute of the frame. Martin came up with highlight saves on Knights stars Max Domi, Bo Horvat and Mitchell Marner to deal London its second loss in a row.

It was just the fifth time all season Martin has held a team to fewer than two goals. The Oakville, Ont., native has been a workhorse, facing 36.7 shots per game and playing in 44 of the Steelheads' 47 games.

No. 3 star: Coda Gordon, Swift Current Broncos (WHL)

Gordon (2G-2A, +4) was the first star as the Broncos had a cathartic 7-0 pounding of the Prince Albert Raiders after coming up empty earlier in the weekend vs. Kootenay and Brandon. The Calgary Flames pick has been nicked up for portions of the season, but has a solid 47 points over 36 games. Sunday, the 19-year-old Gordon gave Swift Current an early reward with a first-period unassisted goal, then factored into two tallies 53 seconds apart early in the second that took the lead out to 4-0.

The 19-year-old Gordon also set up rookie Jake DeBrusk (1G, +3) for a tally late in that period.

Honourable mention: Eric Cornel, Peterborough Petes (OHL)

Cornel (2G-2A, +3) and his linemates Hunter Garlent (2G-2A, +3) and Brett Ritchie (3A, +3) combined for 11 points in a 7-4 Petes road win over the Ottawa 67's. Cornel, who's shifted to right wing to accommodate the recently acquired Garlent, scored twice in the first five minutes of the second period. The Kemptville, Ont., native further marked his homecoming to the national capital region by assisting on Garlent's clinching goal in the third period.

Honourable mention: Brady Vail, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)

Vail (1G-2A, +2), a Montreal Canadiens pick, was a factor in all of the scoring as the Spits cooled off the Sudbury Wolves with a 3-1 win. The Florida native has 25 points over his last dozen games after Sunday's outburst. Vail got the Spitfires started by assisting on Sam Povorozniouk's short-handed goal in the second minute of the game. The teams were level at 1-1 before Vail untied the game with 12:57 to play, then set up Trevor Murphy for a clinching power-play goal.

Dishonourable mention: Nikolay Goldobin, Sarnia Sting (OHL)

The Sting star got a five-minute match penalty after slew-footing Oshawa's Mitchell Vande Sompel with five minutes to play in a one-goal game. That's a suspension waiting to happen.

Oshawa scored twice on the ensuing power play to seal its 5-2 win.

Potent notables — All three WHL games were shutouts, with Tri-City's Eric Comrie (43 saves to vex Vancouver 4-0), Portland's Brendan Burke (25 to skunk Spokane 5-0) and Swift Current's Eetu Laurikainen (35 to bagel Prince Albert) doing the honours ... Vancouver Canucks prospect Cole Cassels (1G-2A, +3) and his wings Bradley Latour (4A, +3) and Hunter Smith (2G-1A, +3) combined for 10 points during Oshawa's win over Sarnia ... Sixteen-year-old rookie Olivier Galipeau's first QMJHL goal got Val-d'Or a regulation tie with league-leading Blainville-Boisbriand, then the Foreurs won the breakaway relay ...
