No. 1 star: Ivan Provorov, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

Exceptional players elevate their game when it's needed, and Provorov (1G-2A, +1) picked it up to help Brandon edge Calgary 5-4 to halt its two-game win streak.

The Wheat Kings also came in dragging a nine-game losing streak at the Saddledome and were down 2-0 midway through the second period. They snapped to life in the final five minutes of the frame, as Provorov assisted on a goal by Florida Panthers draft choice Jayce Hawryluk. The highly touted 17-year-old Russian also scored a power-play goal in the third period that gave the Wheat Kings their first lead and accrued an assist on Rihards Bukarts' eventual game-winner with 4:48 left in the third.

The win kept the Wheat Kings four points clear of Medicine Hat (which has two games in hand) in the Dub's Eastern Conference.

No. 2 star: Alex Barré-Boulet, Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL)

Barré-Boulet (2G, -1) had the hot hand as the Volts scorched Memorial Cup host Quebec Remparts 5-4. Drummondville scored goals 38 seconds apart early to put the Remparts on their heels, with Barré-Boulet getting the 2-0 tally on a setup from Michael Carcone. Quebec bounced back to take a 3-2 lead into the final 10 minutes of the third period, but Tampa Bay Lightning second-rounder Adam Erne was whistled for high-sticking. At the tailend of the power play, the 17-year-old Barré-Boulet scored again to tie the game. Drummondville veteran Christophe Lalancette, then scored the winner with 1:19 to play.

No. 3 star: Taylor Dupuis, Sarnia Sting (OHL)

Dupuis had what is, by now, a typical performance for him, making 41 saves to help the Sting win the quintessential four-pointed by edging the Owen Sound Attack 2-1. The overage goalie did his best work in the middle frame with 19 saves to maintain a 1-0 lead. Defenceman Kevin Spinozzi, whose role has increased following the Anthony DeAngelo sell-off, struck for a big goal with 11:44 left in the third to give Sarnia some cushion. That was enough for Dupuis, who's a major reason why Sarnia is fifth in the Western Conference, three points ahead of Owen Sound while having played two more games.

Honourable mention: Ashton Sautner, Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL)

Given how many minutes the Oil Kings captain logs on the blueline, it's not surprising he would be on for every goal during a 4-1 road win against the Swift Current Broncos. Sautner (2A, +4) had a strong afternoon for Edmonton, earning primary assists on Tyson Gruninger's opening goal and a Tyler Robertson tally that opened a four-goal lead at the quarter-point of the third period.

Potent notables — Anaheim Ducks first-rounder Shea Theodore (1G-1A, +1) led Seattle to a win over Tri-City ... Connor McDavid (1G-1A) was named No. 1 star during Erie's 5-3 win over London. League points leader Mitchell Marner received a boarding major/game misconduct ... Rookie Jeremy Brodeur (19 saves) had his second straight shutout during Oshawa's 4-0 win against Mississauga ... Lucas Peressini raised his save percentage to .927 after making 40 saves in Kingston's 4-2 win at Ottawa. Ted Nichol scored his first OHL goal for the Frontenacs, who had a 5-of-6 week ... Guelph goalie Bradley Van Schubert earned his first OHL win after handling 32-of-34 shots during a 4-2 win over Kitchener. Detroit Red Wings prospect Tyler Bertuzzi scored his 25th for the Storm.
