Habs prospect Martin Reway is No. 1 star again: Sunday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Martin Reway, Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)

Reway (1G-3A, +2) had a four-point day during an Olympiques come-from-behind road win over a Maritimes Division team, just like he did Saturday at Charlottetown. The Habs fourth-rounder fairly schooled fellow 18-year-old Ivan Barbashev, NHL Central Scouting's top-ranked draft prospect in the Quebec League, on both the tying and winning goals in the third period.

Gatineau trailed until 7:11 of the third period when Barbashev (1G-1A, -3) went for a 'Sunday skate' while retrieving a puck that had slid into his own zone during a Wildcats power play. Reway won the race and then made a cross-ice backhand dish to tee up Émile Poirier (1G-1A) for the Calgary Flames first-rounder's team-high 16th goal. A whole 108 seconds later, Reway won another half-wall battle with Barbashev and took the puck to the net before putting Gatineau ahead for good.

Reway had two short-handed assists. The first was on Tommy Lapierre's first QMJHL goal, which made it a special 17th birthday weekend for the rookie wing.

No. 2 star: Christopher Clapperton, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (QMJHL)

Armada coach Jean-François Houle parked his leading scorer in the press box on Friday. Message received and mission accomplished. Clapperton (1G-3A, +4), Danick Martel (2G, +2) and Marc-Olivier Roy (3A, +2) led B-B to a 6-2 win over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, combining for nine points in a game that was closer than the score might indicate.

Rouyn-Noranda stayed even for 40-plus minutes before Frédéric Bergeron put B-B ahead 2-1 early in the third. Clapperton, the Florida Panthers fifth-rounder who has 31 points in just 18 games so far this season, scored later in the frame. The 19-year-old then had assists on Martel's markers 24 seconds apart that left the Huskies wondering, "Hey, wasn't this game close a couple minutes ago?"

No. 3 star: Todd Fiddler, Prince George Cougars (WHL)

Fiddler (3G-2A, +2) delivered what Prince George envisioned when it traded him for last week, going off for a big night to stanch the bleeding after seven losses in a row for the Cougars. The overage finisher was credited with the winner, on the power play, seven seconds into overtime to give P.G. an 8-7 win over the Kamloops Blazers. All five of his points came on game-tying or go-ahead goals.

The Cougars' 12 per cent power play ended up 3-for-6 on the night. Fiddler had some influence in that development, scoring in the first period on the PP. He set up a Zach Pochiro tally 88 seconds later to put P.G. ahead 4-3 after the first period. Fiddler sniped again in the third and assisted on Joseph Carvalho's first WHL goal that staked P.G. to a 7-6 advantage. That didn't last since Aspen Sterzer (2G-1A, +1) promptly tied it the game 7-7, so Fiddler and Troy Bourke had to work OT to get the result.

Honourable mention: Eric Locke, Saginaw Spirit (OHL)

Locke (1G-3A, +2) did not a get a star inside the K-Rock Centre, where he helped the Spirit complete a perfect 3-0 eastern swing by swamping the Kingston Frontenacs 9-4. It was an easily explainable decision, since half-a-dozen Spirit skaters enjoyed multi-point efforts.

Nevertheless, the 20-year-old who nearly made the Buffalo Sabres' top farm team in September had a big night. Locke was in on four of the first five Saginaw goals as they opened a three-goal cushion by the midpoint over an apparently fragile Frontenacs team.

Spirit defenceman Jacob Ringuette (1A, +1) was selected first star in the building. Locke's fellow Sabres hopeful Justin Kea (2G-1A, +4) and Winnipeg Jets third-rounder Jimmy Lodge (1G-2A, +2) were also recognized.

Honourable mention: Brian Hughes, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

It looked grim for Hughes when he was kneed by Belleville Bulls captain Brendan Gaunce at the end of the second period Sunday. The Bulls killed off Gaunce's major/game misconduct and scored twice to lead 5-4. In a bit of poetic justice, Hughes (2G, -1) scored off a scramble with fewer than two seconds on the clock to give Eastern Conference-leading Oshawa a regulation tie.

It would have been a perfect ending if Hughes, who had scored only once in 20 previous games prior to Sunday, could have scored the shootout decider. He was stopped in the second round, but stars Scott Laughton and Michael Dal Colle converted to give Oshawa a come-from-behind 6-5 win.

Dal Colle's seven-game point streak was snapped during the contest.

Honourable mention: Travis Konecny, Ottawa 67's (OHL)

The Barberpoles' beacon had a strong weekend overall and rewarded by factoring into all of the 67's scoring during a 4-3 shootout out loss to the Kitchener Rangers, who ended an eight-game win streak. Konecny (1G-2A, +1) had the secondary apples on two early 67's goals. Kitchener, playing desperate, poured 51 shots on goal and led 3-2 in the late going when Konecny was crunched into the boards from behind by the Rangers' Darby Llewellyn. On the ensuing power play, Konecny came on as the sixth attacker and scored the tying goal.

Llewellyn ended up scoring in the second round of the shootout to help Kitchener give 18-year-old goalie Matt Greenfield (24 saves) his first OHL win.
