Guelph Storm’s Garret Sparks wins one for injured teammate, avenges blowout loss; Sunday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Garret Sparks, Guelph Storm (OHL)

Sparks made London Knights fans want to drown their sorrows by making 44 saves in the Storm's 4-1 win at Budweiser Gardens, which was quite a reversal from Guelph getting hammered 8-2 at the Sleeman Centre seven days ago. The Toronto Maple Leafs third-rounder was a rock for Guelph, making a big breakaway stop on 45-goal scorer Seth Griffith before also making 20 saves in the final frame when the Knights exerted heavy pressure for the tying goal.

The Storm stayed composed despite a scary situation where overage forward Cody McNaughton was injured in the second period after a collision with a Knight. McNaughton was down on the ice motionless for several minutes and was stretchered off. The Storm tweeted that he was released from hospital and able to return home.

Winnipeg Jets draft choice Scott Kosmachuk (2G-1A) iced the win with 2:52 to play. Kosmachuk's forechecking hassled Knights star defenceman Olli Maatta, who served up a pizza. Zack Mitchell intercepted the ill-advised clearing attempt and quickly zipped a pass to a wide-open Kosmachuk.

No. 2 star: Gabryel Paquin-Boudreau, Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL)

The Drakkar's highly touted rookie had three points in just his fourth major junior game to help the Drakkar beat the Chicoutimi Saguenéens 4-2. Paquin-Boudreau (1G-2A, +1) fired up the Drakkar by scoring 1:35 into the second period to erase an early Chicoutimi lead, then got a power-play assist later in the frame and also set up Félix Girard's clincher with 5:43 left in the game.

No. 3 star: Brady Vail, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)

The Montreal Canadiens choice had a four-point day to lead Windsor past the Sudbury Wolves 5-2. Vail (2G-2A, +1) sapped Sudbury's spirit with goal in the second period just 45 seconds after teammate Kerby Rychel had notched his long-awaited first of the season after going goal-less in Windsor's first four games. The Vail-Ben Johnson-Chris Marchese line has perhaps been Windsor's strongest lately; Marchese also earned 3 Stars recognition this week. It was Vail's second career four-point game, but presumably this was in tighter-checking conditions since the first one came in a 10-9 game.

Vail has nine points in five games, tied with Chicoutimi's Charles Hudon for the most among Montreal's June draft choices. For what it's worth, No. 3 overall pick Alex Galchenyuk has three in four games for Sarnia.

Honourable mentions: Tyler Biggs, Boone Jenner and Lucas Lessio, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

The trio of 2011 draft choices each had two-goal games to power the Generals to an impressive 7-4 win over the Brampton Battalion for their third consecutive victory. Biggs (2G-1A, +4) finished off Brampton with goals 1:48 apart midway through third, finishing off on the rush for a backbreaker goal that opened a 5-3 cushion. Jenner (2G-1A, +4), who is leading the Ontario League in scoring, scored the first two Oshawa goals (and would have had a hat trick if not for a desperate diving save by Battalion goalie Jake Smith). Lessio got both of his goals on nearly identical snapshots from the top of the circle.

Potent notables — Right wing Rob Trzonkowski scored his first goal as a Kamloops Blazer, burying a breakaway chance in a shutout road win at Victoria ... Calgary Flames fourth-rounder Brett Kulak had two assists to help the Vancouver Giants edge Spokane 3-2 for their first win ... In the OHL, Boston Bruins prospect Dougie Hamilton two points and was +4 in Niagara's 5-4 loss at Kingston. Frontenacs centre Ryan Kujawinski had two goals ... Brampton's Blake Clarke, 16, and Oshawa's Bradley Latour, 17, both scored their first major junior goal ... In the QMJHL, the Rimouski Océanic's 6-foot-4, 219-pound rookie forward Frédérik Gauthier had his first two-goal game in a 5-4 shootout loss to Acadie-Bathurst. The Titan's Raphaël Lafontaine tied the game with three seconds left in regulation, but absented himself for the shootout by getting a misconduct in overtime ... Florida Panthers top prospect Jonathan Huberdeau was the game's first star as Saint John beat Moncton 5-1 for its fourth win in a row ... Buffalo Sabres first-rounder Mikael Grigorenko had a three-assist day for Quebec ... Jimmy Oligny (1G-1A) led P.E.I. to a 6-2 win over Gatineau.
