Friday’s 3 Stars: Colorado Avalanche prospect Michael Sgarbossa within one point of OHL scoring lead

No. 1 star: Michael Sgarbossa, Sudbury Wolves (OHL)

Cue Frank Costanza: You wanted a scoring race in the OHL? You got one! In his first game since joining the Colorado Avalanche organization, Sgarbossa went off for two goals and three assists against a very good defensive team to lead the Wolves to an 8-5 win over the Kitchener Rangers. The five-point night brought the 19-year-old up to 89 on the season, one back of Los Angeles Kings prospect Tyler Toffoli, who was blanked during the Ottawa 67's win at Sarnia.

Sgarbossa got the Wolves, who have struggled at home this season, rolling with a one-timer goal in the first period and a sweet dish to Nathan Pancel for the second Sudbury goal. He carried in over the blueline, pulled up to freeze the defenders and then saucered the puck to an onrushing Pancel. The night was capped off with a penalty-shot goal in the final minutes where Sgarbossa skated in at the pace of Hans Moleman, then whipped the puck past world junior goalie John Gibson low stick side to ice the game.

No. 2 star: Cody Sylvester, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)

The captain steered the ship from the rocks, getting his second goal of the game 3:46 into overtime to cap Calgary's 4-3 comeback win over the Saskatoon Blades. The Blades absolutely needed a regulation win to have a realistic hope of catching the Hitmen for fourth place in the WHL's Eastern Conference. With goalie Andrey Makarov playing like he did in the same building during the world junior, it seemed like they might get it. But Sylvester jammed in a wraparound midway through the third period to cut the margin to 3-2. After Victor Rask forced overtime and each team hit a goalpost in OT, Sylvester pounced on a Blades turnover and buried the winner. The victory clinched a playoff spot for Calgary.

No. 3 star: Seth Griffith, London Knights (OHL)

Griffith's quest for 50 goals is back on. The 19-year-old winger was flying in London's nationally televised 7-2 win over Oshawa Generals, scoring a hat trick to reach 44 goals on the season. It was part of a big night for several Knights. Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Greg McKegg and Nashville Predators first-rounder Austin Watson each had four points.

Honourable mention: Rock Régimbald, Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)

Now that's a nice night: Régimbald was the main reason Gatineau got to a shootout against the Drummondville Voltigeurs and he completed it, getting the decisive tally in the third round for a 4-3 Olympiques win. He also had two goals and one assist during regulation time, not too shabby for someone who had only eight goals all year coming into the night.

Honourable mention: Jonathan Huberdeau, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)

The future Hab (heh, heh) had four goals to help Saint John mash the P.E.I. Rocket 8-1 in a first-vs.-worst matchup. The Florida Panthers first-round pick had a natural hat trick over a 12-minute span that bridged the first two periods, then got his 27th goal in 31 games this season in the third period. Recently signed Minnesota Wild prospect Charlie Coyle set up three of Huberdeau's goals.

Honourable mention: Brad Ross, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)

The Winterhawks are alone in first overall in the Dub thanks to a 6-4 win over Tri-City that was largely thanks to Ross. The Leafs second-rounder — insert joke about being fired up about not having to play for Ron Wilson here — had two goals and one assist and was no doubt his usual rugged self. Eighteen-year-old Taylor Leier scored the winner in the third period and also got Portland's empty-net clincher.

Potent notables — Anaheim Ducks prospect Emerson Etem had two goals in Medicine Hat's win at Vancouver, giving him a WHL-best 55 ... Overage goalie Adam Brown had 43 saves to help Kelowna clinch a playoff berth by beating B.C. Division-leading Kamloops 6-3 ... fellow overage goalie Jon Groenheyde had a 45-save shutout in Swift Current's win over Red Deer ... In the OHL, Ottawa Senators prospect Shane Prince (1G-1A for Ottawa at Sarnia) increased his point streak to 21 games ... Los Angeles Kings draft pick Michael Schumacher scored two third-period goals to help Sault Ste. Marie improve its playoff chances with a 4-3 win over Peterborough. New York Rangers prospect Andrew Yogan (1G-2A) factored in all of the Petes' scoring ... Chicago Blackhawks prospect Brandon Saad and 18-year-old Eric Locke each had two goals in Saginaw's 8-7 shootout win over Erie. The Otters' Stephen Harper joined London's Max Domi as the only 16-year-olds in the league with 20 goals on the season ... In the QMJHL Raphaël Pouliot's two goals paced Blainville-Boisbriand to 6-2 win at Baie-Comeau.
