No. 1 star: Filip Chlapik, Charlottetown Islanders (QMJHL)

The Czech import registered his first hat trick in North America, scoring three times and adding two assists in a 5-1 Islanders win over Drummondville.

The 17-year-old had five points in five games at the Ivan Hlinka U-18 tournament over the summer, and is trying to make his case to be included on the Czech roster for the world junior tournament despite his youth.

Chlapik is now up to 13 goals and 32 points in 25 games in his rookie season in the QMJHL, and he’s projected as a possible first-round pick in the upcoming NHL draft.

In Sunday’s game, Chlapik netted a goal in each period, and set up goals by Alexandre Goulet and Daniel Sprong. Afterward, Islanders captain Ryan MacKinnon had some high praise for Chlapik in the Charlottetown Guardian:

“Chlapik is a special player,” MacKinnon told the Guardian. “His puck-handling skills and the way he sees the ice is second to none.”

The Islanders have won three straight to get over the .500 mark at 12-11-1-1.

No. 2 star: Sam Studnicka, Ottawa 67’s (OHL)

After two seasons of futility, the 67’s are back on the road to respectability. Ottawa made two symbolic statements Sunday, getting over the .500 mark and doing so by throttling the defending champion Guelph Storm, 8-5.

The outburst was aided by an unlikely hero, as 19-year-old Studnicka notched his first OHL hat trick in his 156th game. He came in to the game with just two goals this season in 15 outings, and 12 in his career.

“Anytime I get three it’s a rare night,” Studnicka told assembled media after the game. “I just shot the puck and it worked out for us.”

Studnicka scored the first goal in each period, giving Ottawa a 1-0 lead just 2:20 into the game. After Guelph fought back from two down to tie the game through one period, Studnicka struck again 5:19 into the second to make it 3-2 for the 67’s. He then rounded out the hat trick with an unassisted goal 34 seconds into the third to push the lead to 5-3.

He wasn’t the only unexpected hero for Ottawa, as 19-year-old rookie Nathan Todd scored his first two OHL goals in his 15th game with the 67’s, who are now 9-8-0-1 this season.

No. 3 star: Luca Ciampini, Baie-Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL)

Ciampini is enjoying a bounce-back season after being traded from Halifax to Baie-Comeau in the offseason, and the overager scored the first three goals in a 4-0 win over Chicoutimi for his first hat trick since October 2012. He assisted on the other goal.

The Montreal native moved into the top 10 in the league in goals, as he has 16 in 25 games this season after putting up just 15 in 65 games last year with the Mooseheads. That was down from his career high of 25 in 2012-13.

By winning percentage, the Drakkar are the No. 3 team in the Q, though they remain a point behind Rimouski for first in the tough East Division.

Honourable mention: Nic Petan, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)

A two-goal night shouldn’t be an odd development for Petan, but the 19-year-old Winnipeg Jets prospect doubled his goal total for the season with a pair in a dominant 7-1 victory over U.S. Division-leading Everett.

Petan scored Portland’s first two goals, and the second prompted Silvertips coach Kevin Constantine to get ejected from the game for arguing a non-call by referee Mike Campbell.

Petan rounded out a three-point period by assisting on Oliver Bjorkstrand’s power-play goal, and the Winterhawks went on to score the final seven goals of the game.
