Everett Silvertips’ Tyler Sandhu nets hat trick: Wednesday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Tyler Sandhu, Everett Silvertips (WHL)

Sandhu (3G, +1) scored his second career hat trick, which hardly came in a vacuum since the Richmond, B.C., native has been a point-a-game performer over the past month. Unfortunately for Sandhu and Everett, it squandered a pair of two-goal leads in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Regina Pats.

The 17-year-old Sandhu clicked on a nice passing play with overage linemates Josh Winquist (3A, +1) and Manraj Hayer for his first of the night in the second period, taking a good shot and then driving to the net to locate and deposit the rebound. Sandhu struck again in that frame. In the third, he drove to the net and redirected a sweet feed from Edmonton Oilers third-rounder Jujhar Khaira to open a 5-3 advantage.

An interference penalty with two minutes left enhanced Regina's chances of earning at least one point and defenceman Dmitry Sinitsyn (1G-3A, +1) scored with 69 seconds left to force OT. Sinitsyn also assisted on the overtime winner, which capped a character win for Regina. The Pats had a five-defenceman bench for more than two periods after captain Kyle Burroughs, a New York Islanders draft pick, was struck in the head by a puck while seated on the bench with his helmet off.

Winquist's three helpers gave him 26 points in his last 10 games.

No. 2 star: Garrett Hooey, Belleville Bulls (OHL)

Hooey (2G-2A, +3) continued to play his Ryan Smyth-lite role to the hilt as he helped the Bulls muster up enough production to beat the Kingston Frontenacs 6-3 in a game with 110 recorded shots on goal. (It was wide-open, but the tally didn't seem that high.)

The 19-year-old from Hampton, Ont., had two primary assists in the first period when the Bulls chased Kingston goalie Lucas Peressini after three goals on 16 shots. In the second, Hooey scored the eventual winner, winning a defensive zone faceoff to initiate a rush that he completed by rifling the puck into the net. Later in that frame, Hooey stifled a Kingston rally by poking a rebound by goalie Matt Mahalak to put Belleville up 5-3.

Bulls goalie Charlie Graham was credited with 57 saves.

No. 3 star: Alexandre Caron-Roy, Quebec Remparts (QMJHL)

Caron-Roy (2G, +1) and Anaheim Ducks second-rounder Nick Sorensen (2G, +3) tallied twice apiece as the Remparts did a number on league-leading Blainville-Boisbriand with a 6-0 win. Caron-Roy, an 18-year-old in his first full season in the Q, had no goals in 25 previous career games. But he caught lightning in a bottle by scoring goals 2:17 apart late in the second period to put the game away. Sorensen's double came in his first game back after missing six with a brain injury, while Tampa Bay Lightning second-rounder Adam Erne (3A, +3) created space and chances for his teammates all night.

Honourable mention: Chad Robinson, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

Like Caron-Roy, Robinson (2G, +2) was an unlikely marksman during the Wheaties' 5-2 road win over the rival Saskatoon Blades. The Eastern Division rivals were even at twos late in the second when the heart-and-soul overage, a western Manitoba native, scored unassisted for just his second goal of the season. In the first minute of the third, Robinson scored solo again and the Blades were unable to reply.

Potent notables — Regina's German rookie, Maximilian Kammerer, scored his first WHL goal ... Goalie Eetu Laurikainen fielded only 14 shots for the shutout in Swift Current's ninth win in a row, 3-0 over Kootenay ... Medicine Hat's Marek Langhamer stopped 26-of-27 to beat Kamloops ... In the QMJHL, 16-year-old Daniel Sprong (1G-2A, +1) led Charlottetown to a 4-1 win over Drummondville ... Lucas Batt (1G-1A, +1) scored his first of the season to help Moncton end a slide by routing Rimouski 6-1. Ivan Barbashev (1G-1A, +2) and overage JC Campagna (1G-1A, +3) also had multi-point nights.
