No. 1 star: Connor McDavid, Erie Otters (OHL)

Not that McDavid and Boston University's Jack Eichel are in direct competition or anything, but the Erie Otters captain has only had seven points in two games since the other top NHL draft prospect delivered a dominant performance in the USA Hockey All-American game on Thursday.

That includes bringing the Otters back for a 5-4 come-from-behind overtime win over the Plymouth Whalers. McDavid (2G-2A, +1) fed defenceman Darren Raddysh (1G-2A) for the OT winner and also scored the equalizer with 1:12 remaining. The Newmarket, Ont., native also directed traffic for an Otters power play that went a crackling 4-for-7.

Two other Otters 17-year-olds, Alex DeBrincat (2G) and Dylan Strome (3A, -1), enjoyed multi-point nights.

No. 2 star: Maxim Lazarev, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (QMJHL)

Between the Eagles' Lazarev and Evgeny Svechnikov and the Shawinigan Cataractes' Anthony Beauvillier and Dennis Yan, there was a lot of young talent doing work in the Mauricie region on Saturday night. Lazarev (4A, +3) came up big to help Cape Breton, coming off an overtime loss in its prior outing, cool off the hot-starting Cataractes 5-4.

Three of Lazarev's four assists were primary helpers, including a helper of Svechnikov's fifth of the young season. Yan (2G, +1) and Beauvillier (2A, +1) helped Shawinigan earn the single point before Cape Breton won in the 4-on-4.

No. 3 star: Tristan Jarry, Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL)

The Memorial Cup-winning goalie delivered another signature performance, stopping 36-of-37 shots to help the Oil Kings win 2-1 at Medicine Hat, one of the toughest places for visiting teams in the Dub. Edmonton was not running at full capacity, yet the Pittsburgh Penguins prospect made sure the game remained up for grabs. The only Medicine Hat goal came on a short-handed breakaway. Jarry held the fort until Edmonton conjured up two third-period tallies through centre Cole Benson (2A, +2).

Honourable mentions: Marcus Crawford and Mitchell Stephens, Saginaw Spirit (OHL)

The Spirit, who are likely to rebuild, beat Sarnia 4-3 in overtime thanks to a couple season 'firsts' from two 17-year-olds. Stephens (2G, +1) got the power-play game-winner off a feed from Crawford (3A, +1) with 1:36 left in overtime. For Stephens, it was his first two goals of the season, while Ajax, Ont., native Crawford got his first three OHL points in his second career game.

Honourable mention: Justice Dundas, Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)

This will help the former Ontario leaguer feel right at home: the overage had two goals in his first game in the Q, helping Saint John smush Nikolaj Ehlers-less Halifax 7-0.

Potent notables — Tampa Bay Lightning pick Brayden Point (3G, +3) had a natural hat trick in Moose Jaw's 7-1 rout of Saskatoon ... Florida Panthers second-rounder Jayce Hawryluk (1G-2A, +2) helped Brandon beat Swift Current for a 4-0 start ... Washington Capitals draft pick Madison Bowey had three assists in his season debut as Kelowna won 8-2 at Prince George ... Detroit Red Wings-signed defenceman Joe Hicketts got the overtime winner for Victoria ... Carson Stadnyk (2G-1A, +3) got each of his goals at even strength to help Everett beat Portland 5-1 in a game notable for the discrepancy in power plays (try 11-1 in favour of the 'Tips). ... New Jersey native Brandon Crawley got his first career OHL goal to help the London Knights post their first win, 4-3 over Owen Sound in the breakaway relay ... Keigan Goetz also broke his maiden by scoring the winner with 43 seconds left to help Sault Ste. Marie shade Niagara 3-2 ... Plymouth first-rounder Will Bitten also got his first in the league during the Whalers' home opener ... In the QMJHL, Chicoutimi's Julio Billia made 38 saves in a 3-1 road win at Moncton.
