Edmonton Oil Kings’ Christmas video spoofs bad music-compilation commercials

When the Edmonton Oil Kings traded veteran forward Klarc Wilson on Jan. 9, 2013, thoughts immediately turned to how this would impact the WHL's team Christmas video.

Well, probably no one but me had that thought, but try to play along. Now that the "exceptionally popular" Wilson, the suave MC of the Oil Kings' 2011 and '12 Christmas videos, is with the Prince George Cougars, Edmonton had to switch it up for this holiday season. The result is a send-up of the 1980s-vintage TV spots for all those K-Tel Christmas compilation albums your mother probably bought instead of that one toy you really wanted, not that anyone is still bitter about 30 years later.

May the offerings of Corbett the D-man, O Penalty, Mitch Moroz Is Coming To Town and backup goalie Tyler Santos' moving Shutout Night (with "you won't score on me" replacing "sleep in heavenly peace") become classics.

Could have used more jazz hands from Ottawa Senators first-round pick Curtis Lazar, Edmonton Oilers second-rounder Moroz and their linemate Dysin Mayo. Rest is fine. Also, nice touch by having defenceman Ben Carroll not sing.

Edmonton hosted Portland in a rematch of the past two Ed Chynoweth Cup final series on Friday, where Moroz demonstrated what can happen when he comes into town.

The Oil Kings advertise this as "on sale now at record stores almost nowhere." If it were a real thing, someone's parents might be getting the CD in hope they will stop subjecting his siblings and their significant others to John Denver this holiday season.
