Clean check of the year? Bemidji State recruit Corey Petrash makes USHL foe turn cartwheel (VIDEO)

Youngstown Phantoms centre Josh Stork might feel otherwise, but in this era of constant concern about checks that cross the line, it's refreshing to see the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' Corey Petrash bring back the hip check, one of the game's lost arts.

One seldom sees plays like this anymore. During a United States Hockey League game on Friday, Petrash lined up Stork perfectly as Youngstown was trying to break out of its own zone, wedging him against the boards and making him do a complete cartwheel before coming back down to earth. Completely clean, no physical retaliation, everyone kept playing — the way it ought to be.

Petrash, who's from East St. Paul, Man., near Winnipeg, is undersized at a listed 5-foot-10, 180 pounds. But the 18-year-old who's committed to play for Bemidji State showed some cunning to upend Stork and send him flying.

Petrash, you might recall, was the player who was in the fight two weeks ago where Dubuque's Dylan Chanter struck his head on the ice and suffered a seizure. It's awkward to mention that, although no fair-minded person could possibly have blamed Petrash for what was a bit of a freak occurrence.

During the outpouring of concern for Chanter, it was easy to overlook there was another young player who presumably might have had some guilt to work through after injuring a fellow competitor. Based on the above snippet of action, it is good to see Petrash appears to have turned the page and continued playing the uncompromising game that an undersized Manitoba kid needs to in order to get to the next stage in his hockey path.

In any event, great check.
