Chicoutimi’s Laurent Dauphin flips the outcome: Friday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Laurent Dauphin, Chicoutimi Saguenéens (QMJHL)

The top rookie scorer in the Q played older than he really is, getting three points to help the Saguenéens surge back to for a 5-4 shootout win in Victoriaville after spotting the Tigres a three-goal lead in the opening 20 minutes. Dauphin, 17, was Chicoutimi's first-round choice in 2011 and is proving he was worth waiting a season for (he is only 6-foot and 166 pounds, so it was probably for the best for him not to take a pounding as a 16-year-old).

After Victoriaville went up 3-0, Dauphin resurrected the Saguenéens in the second period with a goal and an assist. Chicoutimi was down 4-3 and playing short-handed when Dauphin set up Simon Tremblay for the tying goal (Chicoutimi's second shorty of the night). That enabled Chicoutimi to go on to win the skills competition.

Dauphin has 31 points on the season, including 12 in his past seven games.

No. 2 star: J.T. Barnett, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

Barnett missed the final two months of last season with a torn lateral collateral ligament in his knee, then got hurt in this year's season opener and missed another 21 games. Friday, the Scottsdale, Ariz., native returned and scored two goals to help knock off the Regina Pats 5-1. That included scoring the opening goal off a setup from Myles Bell (a former Pat) less than seven minutes into the contest to help put Regina back on its heels. It was Barnett's fifth career two-goal night in the WHL; oddly enough, he has yet to record a hat trick.

No. 3 star: Ryan Hanes, Prince George Cougars (WHL)

Hanes' overage odyssey that has seen him pass through three dressing rooms in two leagues took an uptick, as he scored two goals to help P.G. edge the Victoria Royals 5-4. It's a vignette about perseverance for the 20-year-old grinder who suffered a personal setback when he was assaulted in a bar on Dec. 24 last year. Hanes converted setups from 17-year-old Alex Forsberg (3A, +1) for each of his goals, including the game-winner.

Honourable mention: Darcy Greenaway, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)

Greenaway (3G-1A, +1) put Kingston on the march to a 7-6 comeback win over the Plymouth Whalers. The Frontenacs seemed headed for a repeat of an earlier 8-3 blowout loss to Plymouth. The 5-foot-8 Greenaway got a goal that restored a two-goal deficit just 66 seconds after the Whalers forged ahead 5-2 and tallied again before the second period ended.

Billy Jenkins (2G, +1) took over the scoring in the third period to help Kingston complete the rally. The Whalers'17-year-old Matt Mistele had his first OHL hat trick, but it was probably hard for him to openly enjoy it.

Honourable mention: Jared McCann, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)

The 16-year-old centre had two goals that gave the Soo a cushion in a 5-4 win over the Sudbury Wolves, their northern Ontario rival. The Greyhounds needed it, since they let a three-goal lead get away and needed 51 saves from Pittsburgh Penguins third-rounder Matt Murray to escape with two points. McCann picked the top corner on his first goal and scored his second on a point shot.

Honourable mention: Scott Kosmachuk, Guelph Storm (OHL)

Consider his slump over. Kosmachuk (2G-1A, +2) figured in all Storm goals in their 3-2 win over the Erie Otters. The Winnipeg Jets draft pick ended a seven-game drought by tallying in a blowout win on Wednesday over Mississauga. On Friday, he helped the Storm overcome a 37-save effort by Otters goalie Oscar Dansk.

Honourable mention: Cody Sylvester, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)

The overage Sylvester (2G-1A, +1) helped the Hitmen beat their southern Alberta rival by taming the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-1. Sylvester set up Carolina Hurricanes prospect Victor Rask for his first goal since returning from the AHL, then scored twice on special teams in the second, including a goal on a short-handed breakaway.

Patrik Zdrahal, Acadie-Bathurst Titan (QMJHL)

The 17-year-old Czech had a three-point (2G-1A) night to lead the Titan past Val-d'Or 5-3. Zdrahal snapped a deadlock by scoring the winner with 10:26 to play. Earlier on the night, he factored into two second-period goals that helped the Titan take their first lead of the night.

What did Jonathan Drouin and Nathan MacKinnon do?

THIS. MacKinnon set up a goal by Martin Frk with a no-look pass in the Halifax Mooseheads' win over Cape Breton. MacKinnon had three points in a 4-2 win.

Potent notables — Overage defenceman Davis Vandane had three points in Prince Albert's 6-0 pounding of Brandon ... Twenty-year-old goalie Ty Rimmer had 44 saves in Lethbridge's 2-1 shootout loss to Red Deer ... In the OHL, Trevor Murphy, 17, scored the game-winner in his Windsor Spitfires debut, a 2-1 win over Saginaw. Goalie Jaroslav Pavelka stopped 43-of-44 shots ... League scoring leader Ryan Strome had three points in Niagara's 4-1 win over Belleville, giving him 46 in 25 games ... The Kitchener Rangers' Franky Palazzese had his first career shutout, making 23 saves vs. Sarnia ... Boston Bruins selection Seth Griffifth ran his point streak to 12 games, while his London Knights won their 10th consecutive game ... In the QMJHL, Buffalo Sabres first-rounder Mikhail Grigorenko's hat trick paced Quebec to a 6-0 win over expansion Sherbrooke ...
