Chartier’s hat trick propels Kelowna over Seattle: Saturday’s 3 stars

No. 1 star: Rourke Chartier, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)

The San Jose Sharks’ fifth rounder scored three times, including the winner, as Kelowna defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 6-4 in a back-and-forth game.

Chartier doubled up his goal total on the year to improve the Rockets to 6-0-0-0 on the year.

The game started off with a goal trade off that saw five pucks slip behind both netminders within the first six minutes of the game. Seattle scored twice in the first 2:40, and Kelowna equalized with three of their own in the next two and a half minutes, including two for Chartier.

Seattle then scored two more in the second, giving the T’Birds a 4-3 lead after two periods, cueing the comeback. The Rockets scored three in the final frame to stay undefeated, including the winner from Chartier off a pass from Devante Stephens.

Nick Merkley had four apples for the Rockets in the win, while Justin Kirkland and Riley Stadel had a goal and an assist. Matthew Barzal had a goal and two assists in the loss.

Jackson Whistle got the win in relief of Jake Morrissey in goal for Kelowna, while Danny Mumaugh took the loss for Seattle, who dropped to 2-3-0-0.

No. 2 star: Chase Witala, Prince George Cougars (WHL)

Witala opened the scoring for the Cougars and added three primary helpers to give Prince George an insurmountable lead as they defeated Spokane 6-2.

He scored his third of the year as the only goal of the first period at 17:56, then assisted the Cougars’ next three goals, including one shorthanded, to give Prince George all the offence it eventually needed. His four points gave him nine on the year.

Jari Erricson and David Soltes each had two goals in the win. Witala assisted both Erricson markers. Liam Stewart had both goals in a losing effort for the Chiefs.

Ty Edmonds got the win in net, making 21 stops, while Garret Hughson took the loss, playing the first 40 and giving up three goals. Tyson Verhelst played the third and gave up three more.

Prince George evened their record to 3-3-0-0 with the win, while Spokane took their first regulation loss of the season, dropping to 2-1-1-0 on the year.

No. 3 star: Connor McDavid/Alex DeBrincat, Erie Otters (OHL)

The Otters’ pair of draft-eligible stars had four points each as Erie nailed Sarnia 7-3.

Both McDavid and DeBrincat had four points in the win. DeBrincat had three of his four points on the man advantage, while McDavid scored both of his goals at even strength.

Sarnia actually held a 3-2 lead after one period in Erie, but the Otters came back with a vengeance. They scored five goals over the last 40 minutes to win going away.

Another draft-eligible forward, Dylan Strome, added to his amazing point total with another three assists. Strome has 13 points in four games, while McDavid has 12 and DeBrincat has seven.

Devin Williams took the win in net, with 20 saves, while Justin Fazio took the loss for the Sting. Erie improved to 4-0-0-0 on the year, while Sarnia stayed winless, dropping to 0-3-0-1 on the year.

Honourable mention: Chase Lang, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)

Lang had a goal and three assists as the Hitmen overcame a 4-2 deficit after 40 minutes of play to come-from-behind for a 6-4 win over Kootenay.

Lang had an assist on Kenton Helgeson’s game-opening marker in the first, then added two assists in the comeback and added an insurance marker to cap it off.

Connor Rankin had a goal and two assists in the win, while Luke Philip had a pair of goals in the loss. The Hitmen improved to 3-2-0-1 on the year, while the Ice dropped to 2-3-0-0.

Honourable mention: Ryan Penny, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL)

Penny capped off a big personal weekend with three goals in the Huskies 7-0 whitewashing in Charlottetown.

Penny’s hat trick gave him five goals on the weekend, after a two-goal performance Friday in his return to Moncton for the first time since getting traded from the Wildcats to Rouyn-Noranda.

Teammate Francis Perron had four apples, while blueliner Justin Guénette had three helpers in the win. Samuel Harvey had a 30-save shutout in net.

Honourable mention: Joseph Blandisi, Barrie Colts (OHL)

Blandisi had a goal and added four assists as Barrie blasted Ottawa 9-3. He was the best of a number of good offensive performances for the Colts, including Brandon Lemieux’s two goals and two assists, and a hat-trick for Justin Scott.

The game started innocently enough, as Barrie had a 1-0 lead after the first frame, but the Colts exploded for five in the second and three more in the third for their nine goals. The 67’s added two in the second and one in the third to get to three.

Mackenzie Blackwood got the easy-happy-funtime win in net, making 30 saves while Leo Lazarev took the loss as he was in net for all nine goals, making 31 saves.

Notables: Dylan Sadowy scored twice, including the winner, and Jake Patterson made 39 saves as Saginaw beat Windsor 4-1. … Zach Sawchenko had a 25-save goose egg and Jack Rodewald had a pair of markers as Moose Jaw defeated Tri-City 5-0. … Anthony DeLuca and Alexis Loiseau each scored twice while Christopher Clapperton had three helpers as Rimouski defeated Blainville-Boisbriand 4-3. … Pius Suter had a goal and an assist and Garrett McFadden snapped a 2-2 tie midway through the third for the winner as Guelph edged Owen Sound 3-2. Jack Flinn made 37 saves in the loss. … Ivan Barbashev scored twice and added the winner in the shootout as Moncton got by Val-d’Or 4-3. Vladimir Tkachev had three assists. The Wildcats’ top line of Barbashev, Tkachev and Chris Lalonde were in on eight of Moncton’s nine goals on the weekend. … Ivan Provorov had a goal and two assists, while Tim McGauley had three helpers as Brandon blasted Red Deer 7-1. … Kevin Domingue scored twice and added an assist as Sherbrooke throttled Acadie-Bathurst 6-1. Evan Fitzpatrick made 22 saves for the win. … Braden Chistoffer scored twice as Regina beat Prince Albert 5-2. Daniel Wapple had 24 saves in the win. … Blueliner Duncan MacIntyre had two goals as Cape Breton doubled up Saint John 4-2.
