The hip check is often a lost art, but on Friday, Kelowna Rockets captain Madison Bowey revived it at the expense of the Portland Winterhawks' Evan Weinger on eye-popping fashion on Friday.

During Game 5 of the hotly contested Portland-Kelowna semifinal series in the Western Hockey League, Weinger tried to slip between Bowey and the boards in the neutral zone. Bowey lined him up perfectly, sending Weinger airborne into the camera bay between the benches at Prospera Place.

That fairly demands a Jim Ross-style narration.

Picture every hockey photographer in North America thinking, "Yeah, been there." Fortunately, it didn't appear that either Weinger or the photographer was injured.

Meantime, talk about physical force delivered with impeccable timing by Bowey.

The 20-year-old Winnipeg native was a strong cog for Team Canada during its march to the gold medal at the world junior championship. Bowey's performance for Kelowna and on the international stage has pretty much confirmed that the Washington Capitals got a steal when they selected him No. 53 in the 2013 draft (sorry to twist the knife for any San Jose Sharks fans, but that was four picks after San Jose drafted Gabryel Paquin-Boudreau, whom it's decided not to sign).

Granted, it was a deep draft two summers ago. Bowey's rival in the Western final, Nic Petan, also inexplicably slipped down to the Winnipeg Jets at No. 43 overall. Only one of them, at most, will come out of the series with a chance to meet up against the four members of Team Canada on the Rimouski Oceanic and Quebec Remparts, the two teams already confirmed for the Memorial Cup.
