Middle schooler’s dunk contest plea for LeBron James is pitch perfect

Some argue that the NBA Slam Dunk Contest has lost the panache that once made it a great event. There are plenty of reasons for that, with a lack of a cash prize and the risk of injury prime among them. Still, there are plenty of reasons why the NBA's best high-flyers should consider suiting up for the annual slam fest, and they've never been articulated more clearly than by this middle school basketball player in a random YouTube video directed squarely at (who else) LeBron James.

The young man you see in the video above is named Sollomon Gessesse. Prep Rally honestly has no idea what his age actually is, but we can tell that the Portland, Ore., native is still in middle school (if that) because he recently tweeted about his basketball team finishing its regular season with a 3-5 record, and no high school team plays only eight regular-season games.

Regardless of Gessesse's hoops acumen, he punches above what his weight is on Twitter, where he often tweets directly at NBA stars (and is followed by the likes of HoopMixtape, who originally introduced Prep Rally to the Portlander). While the pre-teen has yet to get any formal Twitter responses, his critiques are often on point, never more so than with the YouTube plea you see above, in which he presents a cogent argument for why King James should compete in the annual All-Star dunk contest in the style of a Jim Rome caller.

Essentially, Gessesse's argument runs like this:

    1) Fans are sick of seeing rookies and bench warmers compete for the dunk title; he caps this line of thought with the terrific line, "It's the NBA where magic happens, not where rookies go because the All-Stars are at the hotel clubbing and drinking and stuff, man. Come on!"

[Related: LeBron James won't rule out return to Cleveland Cavaliers]

    2) Having stars like LeBron sit out the All-Star weekend's showpiece event essentially makes them a hypocrite. As Gessesse points out, LeBron frequently tweets with lines like, "Don't let my Saturday night go to waste." Gessesse argues that LeBron sitting out the dunk contest is doing exactly that for all the fans who are desperate to see him compete.

    3) What else could better help LeBron reclaim his status as the people's choice of NBA superstar? Here's Gessesse: "I know hanging out at the hotel with everybody is fun, or you could choose to go dunking and make everyone in the country chant your name … well, except Ohio."

It's those last, add-on lines to each of Gessesse's claims that really makes his YouTube treatise so great. It's like he's playing his own straight man in a comedian's rant about what LeBron and other NBA stars are doing wrong in trying to rebuild their personal PR.

Of course, Gessesse is exactly right about the whole mess, too. Just months removed from an ugly lockout that painted NBA players and owners as selfish, why shouldn't the league's big stars actually be competing in a once signature event that has grown stale precisely because they now refuse to take part? That rings as selfish as anything else about the annual All-Star event.

That being said, Gessesse's rant, like so many others, will almost certainly fall on deaf ears. The Portland native deserves more credit than that. He may never call in to "The Jim Rome Show" or Portland's 1080 "The Fan" or the likes of legendary New York station WFAN. Regardless, we're giving him an honorary "Rack him," for his efforts. He deserves it.

The NBA has had star power in the dunk contest up until this year. Unless you don't consider Blake Griffin or Dwight Howard stars. Smith makes it sound like the contest hasn't had a star in years.

Of course, some of the most exciting dunks have come from other guys, like Nate Robinson. Everyone whining about how it used to be a star-studded event apparently forgot Dr. Dunkenstein, Darrell Griffiths. Or Kenny "Sky" Walker. Or Dee Brown. Or a very young, pre-celeb Shawn Kemp. Or Harold Miner, Isaiah Rider, Kenny Smith, Brent Barry, Fred Jones, and so on.

Yeah but they're obviously neglecting it this year man. There's only four participants thus far, all no namers and they've scaled it back to one round and leave it up to the fans to decide the winner..its insulting.

Not to mention, when there is a star in it, it sucks because it's only one star. Blake was the only star last year and Dwight was pretty much alone during his times. Nate well he's no big name. Where are the stars that used to compete against each other. Heck it only shows how competitive Kobe and Vince are, they participated when they were in their prime "jumping wise" because they wanted to give fans something to see and well they were confident they would win against all odds. Lebron has and always will be afraid to lose. Everyone loses sometime in their life, but in this case there have been multiple instances where Lebron is insecure with dunks. I mean he is afraid he will lose that he won't compete yet teases every year he might enter. And not to mention there are those many cases when he is playing bball at a camp, or some playground and when he gets dunked on or someone does an ankle breaker on him. He has his "personal" try to confiscate almost every recording of that event so no one sees it. Talk about insecure.

just like the other guys said, it's gotten worse and worse. this year is just sad. good job looking up names on google to support your idea btw... oh and nate was definitely a star. but lately there's been MAYBE one star a year. and you shouldn't count blake griffin because he was a rookie. nobody saw that dunk contest everybody watched him jump the kia the next day on espn :P spud webb competed and won. he should have been the most worried about injury considering he had to jump the highest.

What's the BEST dunk ever in a contest? I'm gonna say Vince Carter when he put his arm through the rim.
      • ADAM ALGER 2 months ago
I'd say Carter's reverse 360 in that same dunk contest - but Carter probably has 3 of the top 5 of all time

      • kyle 2 months ago
HAHAHAHAH.How do you plan on having a charge contest? Have players run full speed at other players? XDDDDBench warming contest: who can rub their #$%$ on the bench the fastest to create the most friction hahahaha.
      • Unknown 2 months ago
to be honest that bench warming contest could be the funniest thing i have heard. Nice job Brent. Does anyone know how I can make it on National headlines? This kid just says what every other male or female basketball fan between 8-88 would say
      • Brian S 2 months ago
Brian Cardinal would win the bench warming contest every year...it wouldnt be fair

@Ultimate Fighter Demar Derozan is good so I agree, I haven't really seen Kenny Dobbs dunk so I can't tell. It would be nice to also have J.R Smith or Andre Iguodala again. These guys are pure highflyers not just "fast-break dunkers"

Lebron can win 10 championships in Miami and it would not weigh as much as 1 championship in Cleveland. He will never be known as one of the greatest players now.
