Power rankings: Deutsche Bank Championship
The FedExCup playoff moves to its second leg with the Deutsche Bank Championship, the PGA Tour's only tournament that runs from Friday to Monday, coinciding with Labor Day.
Jason Day is looking for his third consecutive win after taking The Barclays by six shots. Jordan Spieth, who lost his world No. 1 ranking after missing the cut in New Jersey, will look to rebound with a chance to recapture the top spot in the world. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is back to finish out the playoffs after a two-week break following the PGA to get some extra rest for his ailing ankle.
Here are our top five players for the Deutsche Bank Championship:
1. Jason Day – How could Day not be the No. 1 pick? He's won three of four and is 73-under par in his last five starts. His three wins and the T-4 at the Open Championship came on courses where you had to be near 20 under to win. That's TPC Boston.
2. Henrik Stenson – When Henrik Stenson is on, you've gotta have him in your lineup. He played very well at Plainfield Country Club, locking up solo second place. He's a former winner at TPC Boston, back in 2013, so it's a good combination to have him back in your lineups.
3. Jordan Spieth – Every once in a while, Spieth crumbles under pressure. He did at The Barclays, where he had to finish in the top 14 to hang on to No. 1. He's not a fan of Donald Ross courses, which is something to remember for the future. But he should bounce back well this week, a place he finished T-4 in 2013.
4. Dustin Johnson – Johnson finished T-9 at Plainfield with power and not much else in the bag. He has two fourth-place finishes at TPC Boston in five playoff starts in the event. He hasn't missed a cut. Again, he may not be a great pick to win, but will load up on points.
5. Rory McIlroy – McIlroy would likely rank third or fourth on our ranking had he been playing throughout the summer. Since McIlroy has taken the last two weeks off after a 17th-place finish at the PGA, we have to account for some ring rust. He was a winner here in 2012.
