We've gone through our list of our favorite golf holes in the world, and now it's your turn. Earlier this week, we called for your best holes, and you responded. Here are some of the best entries:
Caylan Nicoli: "On the Big Island of Hawaii, this par 3 (I know, I know, another par 3!) is a beautiful layout where you tee off and must hit it over the Pacific Ocean. Sitting at 158 yards from the blues, and 196 from the blacks. Featured in the Senior Skins game as well. Just take a look at this hole (pictured at right) and you will see why it's amazing to me."
Kevin S: "For a par 5, I'd go with Bethpage Black's 4th. It's 517 yards, uphill. Requires a 260+ carry over deep bunkers if you want to green-it in 2. The trick is that you won't hold the green on your 2nd shot because the green slopes away from you and you end up in Long Island fescue behind the green. If you don't go for it in 2, you can bail out right, and chip close for birdie.
"For a Par 5 at another Muni -- #16 at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas is a 600 yard, slight dog-leg right, with water on the right starting at 150 yards to the green. It's a do-or-die hole where both Eagle and Double Bogey are real possibilities. Many a match has been won and lost on Memorial's 16th.
"For a 'no-name' or a municipal course, Timber Point Golf Course on the south shore of Long Island has one of the best Par 3s you could ever play. Second hole on the Blue course (TPGC has 3 9-hole courses) is a 150 yarder over water into a stiff wind, with panoramic views of the Connectquot River to your left and the Great South Bay behind the hole."
Fourmorebeers goes international:
Non-US non-Scottish... here are nine
Valderrama, Spain17th
New South Wales, Australia 5th
Royal Melbourne, Australia 6th
Ria Bintan, Indonesia 9th
Ballybunion, Ireland 11th
Sunningdale, England 10th
Cape Kidnappers, New Zealand 15th
Fancourt, South Africa, Links course 12th
Fanling, Hong Kong 18th
Ronald Forster: "I'd definitely think about the 6th and 8th at Pebble. The former invites you to go for the green on a blind uphill shot for a relatively short par-5, yet with danger lurking if you come short or if you stray to the right, the Pacific waiting to gobble up your ball. The 8th, on the other hand, has got to be one of the scariest approach shots to a par-4 ever. Almost makes any amateur feel sorry for their golf ball, almost surely subjected to cliff-crashing demise.
"Then there's Augusta's 12th, just because of all the drama over the years (and its sheer beauty in April), and take your pick off any from Old Head, south of Kinsale in Ireland - half the course is on the edge of up-to-300 ocean cliffs, and the course design is just magnificent!"
Sean Cooney throws up his own 18, in no particular order:
#12 Old Head, Ireland Just a fun hole along the cliffs
#7 European Club, Ireland A ball-buster, even on the nicest of days
#18 Pelican Lakes, Colorado Bogey is a good score
#4 Pine Dunes, Texas As solid a par 4 as there is
#17 Murphy Creek, Colorado Long, even in Denver.
#13 Harborside, Starboard, Illinois Long, impossible with a north wind
#2 Enniscrone, Ireland Rolling up and down through the dunes. Listen for the Bell
#13 Druids Glen, Ireland Close your eyes and hit it
#10 Ridge CC, Illinois Scary good hole. Just glad its not #1 anymore
#14 Beverly CC, Illinois Two very good shots required
#17 The Ocean Course, South Carolina Had my own troubles here, even a well struck, well placed shot is no guarantee of bogey or better
#15 Olde Course at Loveland, Colorado Uphill right-to left the whole way to a crazy green
#8 Wolf Creek, Nevada A friend of mine is 0-12 in hitting this green
#1 Wolf Creek, Nevada Can make anybody look like a good player as the ball hangs in the air for an eternity
#7 Cowboys, Texas Again, two extremely solid golf shots required.
#11 Playacar, Mexico Dude, you're in Mexico
#2 Royal County Down, N. Ireland A small white aiming stone isn't nearly enough of a guide on this bitch of a hole
#19 ANYWHERE, EVERYWHERE Hope I'm not the only one who listed this
Finally, Stephen Tucker describes his own addition to the mix, the 178-yard 17th at Cabo del Sol Golf Club's Ocean Course in Los Cabos, Mexico. But he doesn't just describe it, he sets his tribute to music -- Van Halen's cheesetastic '80s classic "Cabo Wabo":
I've been to Pebble, Kiawah Island too
Man, I thought I'd seen it all, oh
Around the world, searchin' every corner
Man, I thought I'd seen the best hole, ah.
There's a sleepy course lies South of the border
You go there once, you'll be there twice
Lots of great golf holes, by the dozen, woo!
Cabo del Sol's 17th sure is nice!
You gotta hit your shot over the beach
You know I wanna
Make a birdie on the par 3
(Oooh) I gotta change my stance
(Oooh) Gotta play the wind
(Oooh) Coming from the right by the sea
(Oooh)
Come on, let me take you down
I will show you all around
(Down in Cabo)
Let me take you down
Keep your head down in Cabo, hope your ball finds the ground
Number 17, you'd have to see it
Ain't no picture ever say it right, no-oow-oh
Walkin' the streets, talking about Cabo del Sol, hah!
The 17th hole keeps you up at night, nooo!
You gotta hit your shot over the beach
You know I wanna
Make a birdie on the par 3
(Oooh) I gotta change my stance
(Oooh) Gotta play the wind
(Oooh) coming from the right by the sea
(Oooh)
Beautiful. I can see Sammy Hagar playing it now!
Thanks again to everyone who contributed, and we'll do this again soon!
