Ray Rice visits the end zone in Cleveland (US Presswire)
Word out of Baltimore this week was that the Ravens intended to go more run-heavy in the second half of the season, what with the team's passing game stalling over the past month. Ray Rice has been terrific on a per-touch basis this season (4.9 YPC), but he entered the day on pace for just 242 carries — nearly 50 less than he received last year.
Rice owners don't really have anything to complain about this week, because he's getting all the work he can handle against the Browns. On Baltimore's opening series, he carried six times for 32 yards, punctuating the drive with an 8-yard touchdown. On the team's next possession, it was five more carries for 26 yards, with Bernard Pierce poaching the TD.
As I type, Rice carries again ... and again. He's up to 14 touches for 68 yards, clearly on his way to a solid day. If you sold low after Ray's quiet performance at Houston, pre-bye ... well, that was shortsighted. Whoops.
We should also note that Joe Flacco is a perfect 9-for-9 thus far, for 95 yards, so the respectable ground attack isn't killing him, at least in terms of efficiency. But if he's going to post a big fantasy line, the Browns are going to have to keep this game competitive. Let's hope.
