Humphries and Moyse stage big comeback to claim another bobsleigh gold

Heading into Wednesday's final two runs of the Sochi Olympics women's bobsleigh competition, Canada's Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse faced an uphill battle in a sport where the objective is to go downhill.

The defending Olympic champions trailed leaders Elana Meyers and Lauryn Williams of the U.S. by 0.23 seconds after the first two runs in a sport where victory is often measured in hundredths of seconds.

As things turned it, it wasn't that big a challenge after all.

The Canadians came up with two exceptional runs while the Americans bounced around the track on the final run to become the first team in the 12-year Olympic history of the event to win back-to-back golds.

Needless to say, the pair was jubilant after claiming victory. Here's what Humphries tweeted shortly after the event:

Things looked good for Canada right off the bat on Wednesday. They cut the deficit to .11 seconds after the third run before blowing past the Americans in the final run to win by .10 seconds.

The American team of Jamie Greubel and Aja Evans took bronze. The Canadian duo of Jennifer Ciochetti and Chelsea Valois finished thirteenth.

The gold improves Canada's medal total to 18, five gold, nine silver and four bronze.

Calgary’s Humphries and Moyse, from Summerside, P.E.I., were favourites to repeat after winning three World Cup events this season and edging Meyers for the overall championship so this can't be termed an upset. But not many people thought they could overcome such a big deficit after the Americans posted two impressive runs on Tuesday.
