Star receivers Chad Owens and Duron Carter have been dominating 2014 highlight reels (videos)

Saturday's Montreal Alouettes-Toronto Argonauts game (4 p.m. Eastern, TSN/ESPN3) is notable for quarterbacks Jonathon Crompton and Ricky Ray, but two of their receivers have also stood out this year. Toronto's Chad Owens and Montreal's Duron Carter have proven to be two of the league's most impressive players. On the year, they have 763 yards, six touchdowns and 712 yards, five touchdowns respectively, best on their teams and good for fifth and sixth respectively in receiving yards in the CFL. Both are averaging 13.2 yards per catch and have also made plenty of spectacular plays. Here's Owens' 69-yard touchdown catch from last week, a key moment in Toronto's 17-point fourth-quarter comeback win over Hamilton:

And here's the first of two remarkable grabs Carter made in Montreal's 40-9 thumping of Saskatchewan last week:

And the second one:

Owens' catch is about raw speed and agility, which he uses to good effect to get separation from Ticats' linebacker Erik Harris and then again to beat Harris to the goalline. Meanwhile, Carter's first grab shows off both his ability to make plays in tight coverage (he fights off a defender for the ball) and then his aptitude for grabbing yards after the catch; he's able to keep his lateral momentum going, beat safety Tyron Brackenridge to the outside and then race for a touchdown before anyone can catch him. Carter's second grab is also impressive, as he goes up and over a defender to grab an underthrown ball and then somehow lands inbounds.

Both receivers have been tremendous, but in different ways. The 5'8'', 180-pound Owens is speedier, and he has a remarkable ability to make quick cuts and get defenders heading in the wrong direction. The 6'5'', 205-pound Carter has a impressive vertical leap and excels at making catches in tight coverage, plus he's hard to bring down. Their different approaches have led to great CFL success for both, though, and they may well have plenty of further highlights to provide this year.
