    • Here's some cheese to go with the whines

Some recruiting thoughts to ponder as you wait for the first spring practice to get under way. (It's not that long a wait: Army opens next Monday. Seriously. Next Monday, Feb. 13 – 35 days after the 2011 national title game.)

      Big Ten brouhaha

So, Big Ten coaches are peeved/miffed/irked/ticked off by new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer's recruiting tactics.

Meyer probably is rubbing his hands together in delight. If the Big Ten coaches are going to tuck tail and whine rather than recruit harder, he is going to dominate the league even more than Jim Tressel did.

Here's a somewhat shocking fact: In the past five recruiting cycles – the signing classes from 2008 through Wednesday – Big Ten schools signed a combined 13 five-star prospects (Ohio State has signed nine, including two this season). SEC schools signed 10 this cycle alone and 55 combined in the past five. Again, that's 55 to 13.

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema was especially vocal about Ohio State's tactics on Wednesday.

      Bielema:

    • All about the Pac-12: Mediocrity reigns

We're into February, so our conference breakdowns are going to change up a bit this week.

We'll look at the conferences as a whole and break down each team's NCAA tourney hopes. We'll also take a look at the three best games in the league in the next week.

      NCAA locks

      None.

      Looking good

      None.

      In the postseason hunt

Note: Unlike in the other "Big Six" leagues, the Pac-12 has no NCAA lock and, right now, no one looking good for an at-large bid. The teams we're listing in this category are the ones that have a shot at the regular-season title.

Arizona: The Wildcats won at Cal on Thursday and will be looking to beat Stanford on Saturday to remain squarely in the league title chase. The win over California is the Wildcats' only RPI top-50 victory, and they already have eight losses overall and four in league play.

California: Losing at home to Arizona isn't the best way to make a case that you should be in the running for an at-large bid. The Golden Bears have dropped two of their past

Kentucky: The 'Cats have won 14 in a row since losing on a last-second 3-pointer at Indiana on Dec. 10. They have a big week upcoming: vs. Florida on Tuesday and at Vanderbilt next Saturday. They also still have road games remaining against Mississippi State and Florida. UK looks primed for at least a 14-2 record in league play and strongly is in the running for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

      Looking good

Florida: The Gators own a dominating December win over Florida State that looks better by the day. But there also are road losses to Rutgers and Tennessee. Florida plays host to Vanderbilt on Saturday and plays at Kentucky on Tuesday. The Gators play those teams again at the end of the season, and also have road

    • Weekend watch: It's all about the Big Ten

While the biggest game of the weekend involves Big 12 teams, this is a huge weekend for the Big Ten.

The soon-to-end Kansas-Missouri rivalry is taking center stage Saturday, but there are three big Big Ten games, including that league's nastiest get-together (Indiana-Purdue).

While it's still early February, it's not a stretch to say the Kansas-Mizzou game will have a bearing on a potential No. 1 seed.

There's also a key SEC game in Gainesville, with Florida playing host to Vanderbilt. Vandy hasn't exactly enjoyed visiting Gainesville in recent seasons.

Here's a look at the key games this weekend. All times Eastern.

      Top five games to watch

Vanderbilt at Florida, Saturday, 1 p.m., CBS regional: This is the first of four games involving Florida, Kentucky and Vandy in the final month of the season. The Gators are at Kentucky on Tuesday. Both teams are adept from 3-point range, and neither team is overly physical. Vandy has lost on nine of its past 10 trips to Gainesville.

Baylor: The Bears are one of three teams in the running for the league title, and they're also one of three league teams in the hunt for a No. 1 seed. Baylor plays Kansas on Feb. 8 at home, then visits Missouri three days later. There's also a potentially tricky road game with Iowa State to close out the regular season March 3.

Kansas: Kansas plays back-to-back road games against Missouri and Baylor on Feb. 4 and 8, respectively. The Jayhawks play host to Missouri on Feb. 25. The only other potential hurdle looks to be a road trip to Kansas State on Feb. 13.

Missouri: The Tigers have home games against Kansas on Saturday and Baylor on Feb. 11; they play at Kansas on Feb. 25. Frankly, those look like the only possible

Michigan State: The Spartans fell at Illinois in an ugly one Tuesday night, their third consecutive road loss in league play. Three of their next four are at home, though, and they remain strongly in the hunt for the league crown because they still have two games left with Ohio State.

Ohio State: The Buckeyes are alone in first place after whipping Michigan on Sunday, but they have the toughest closing stretch in the league. They’re one of the few teams nationally with a legit shot at a No. 1 seed, and the closing stretch gives them a chance to earn one.

Wisconsin: The Badgers started 1-3 and folks started throwing dirt on them. But they have righted themselves and are in the hunt for the league title. Wisconsin still has

    • Some recruiting gifts already on display

Wednesday is like Christmas for a number of fans.

It's National Signing Day, which means every school's fan base gets to bask in the glow of "what might be" with their shiny new presents (i.e., recruits).

[ Related: How nation's top teams in 2011 fared in recruiting ]

To stay in that vein, some coaches already have taken the wrapping off some of their "presents." Numerous junior college transfers were December graduates, meaning they already have enrolled at the college of their choice. And the trend of early enrollment for high school seniors remains strong, with a handful of top high school prospects already enrolled.

Here's a look at 10 schools expecting – not hoping for, expecting – big things this fall from some players who already have enrolled.

We'll look at the conferences as a whole and break down each team's NCAA tourney hopes. We'll also take a look at the three best games in the league in the next week.

Georgetown: The Hoyas are two games off the pace in the league race after Saturday's surprising loss at Pittsburgh. They play three of their next four at home, but the one road game in that span is against Syracuse.

[Weekly watch: Big East teams try to put the squeeze on Orange]

Marquette: The Golden Eagles are in second place in the league race, yet remain overlooked nationally. G Darius Johnson-Odom is a legit go-to guy, and coach Buzz Williams' team always plays with high intensity. Marquette has a tough closing stretch, though.

Syracuse: The Orange are in the running for the overall No. 1 seed. This is a deep and well-balanced team. Syracuse hasn't advanced past the Sweet 16 since it won it all behind Carmelo

Duke: The Blue Devils were No. 2 in RPI after Saturday's games, meaning they're in the running for a No. 1 seed. Their past two losses, at Temple and vs. Florida State, were by a combined eight points. The remaining schedule isn't that tough, though there are two games against North Carolina and a trip to Tallahassee.

North Carolina: A 33-point loss at Florida State was embarrassing, but the season-ending injury to G Dexter Strickland is going to have more of a lasting impact. UNC looked as if it had all the pieces to make a legit run at the national title, but Strickland's injury means the Tar Heels' outside shooting now is a big concern. The frontcourt is tremendous, and F Harrison Barnes can take over games.

This is a big week in the Big East as a couple of teams look to stay within striking distance of league leader Syracuse.

Marquette and Georgetown are second and tied for third, respectively, in the conference race, and each has a shot at basically knocking two other teams out of the chase.

It's also another important week in the Big Ten, where seemingly every game involves a team that thinks it has a shot at an NCAA bid.

Here's a look at the key games this week; we'll do this again Friday to spotlight big weekend games. All times Eastern.

      Top five games this week

Michigan State at Illinois, Tuesday, 7 p.m., ESPN: Michigan State needs a win to keep pace with Ohio State atop the Big Ten standings; the Illini, meanwhile, have lost three in a row after Saturday's setback at Minnesota and a team that was in first place by itself in the Big Ten 10 days ago now has to be worried about whether it's going to be able to finish in
